Costco has an amazing return policy too, it's another good place to shop that provides great service.
Costco will let you return anything to them regardless of age or lack of receipt.

I swear, you could probably return a dead body to them as long as the shirt had a "Kirkland" tag on it. [/b][/quote]
I concur. I returned a 6 year old computer monitor that stopped working for a full cash refund, out of warranty and no questions asked. I have yet to find any business that comes close.

I have heard some people will buy a new one and then return the defective one...
I'm pretty sure they would record the serial number of the iPod upon purchase.

Personally, I would never, ever buy an extended warranty on a low-cost electronics device. Even if you bought the top of the line one (as I would guess based on the cost of the warranty), you basically only agreed to a 16% markup on a product who's value can only possibly go down.

It's just not worth it.

As has been mentioned, check with apple. Ipod's have a limited one year warranty, so you might have been covered without having to take on Future Shop's markup charge.

Also, I'm not surpirsed that it is the Northlands location you had a problem with. That Future Shop is also on my permanent boycott list after the manager (might be different guy, as my incident was four years ago) thought that I'd believe a bald faced lie.

First of all, NEVER buy extended warranties. Put the money into a better product (which may very well have a longer warranty anyway). And hell, as electronics continue to always get better for less money, put the $100 into your NEXT purchase, if and when the product you are buying decides to die.

I don't but ANYTHING from Future Shop other than DVD's and video games. Don't trust them past that.

London Drugs? Interesting buys at times, but watch out for "grey market" products. That is where they import them through secondary markets and suppliers who offer their own warranties, and are not valid through local service centers. Caveat emptor on those.

Wal-Mart? Well, I bought a Sports Walkman from them, went rollerblading and had a nasty fall, where the Walkman got toasted. Scratched to beat hell, and my leg as well. It stopped working. Took it back (not thinking they would do anything) and said it didn't seem to handle a fall well. They replaced it immediately, no questions asked. **Edit... they replaced the Walkman, NOT my leg!!!! :P **

Costco? No problems on two returns I have had. Instant cash refund.

Tough lesson to learn about Future Shop, but I agree with a previous poster... take it up with their head office. It worked for me with Sony, and the very first portable CD player that ever existed. I bought one back in '86 for like $500 or something like that. I think the damage that happened to it soon after was my fault, but through escalation, I got a new unit. Squeaky wheel syndrome. Only goes so far, but always worth a try if you have a significant investment in something. Just be cool about it.
