I'm pretty sure they would record the serial number of the iPod upon purchase.
Personally, I would never,
ever buy an extended warranty on a low-cost electronics device. Even if you bought the top of the line one (as I would guess based on the cost of the warranty), you basically only agreed to a 16% markup on a product who's value can only possibly go down.
It's just not worth it.
As has been mentioned, check with apple. Ipod's have a limited one year warranty, so you might have been covered without having to take on Future Shop's markup charge.
Also, I'm not surpirsed that it is the Northlands location you had a problem with. That Future Shop is also on my permanent boycott list after the manager (might be different guy, as my incident was four years ago) thought that I'd believe a bald faced lie.
