I agree, that would be totally douchy.
But that's not at all what I said so I'm not sure why you quoted me. I said:

That's very different from what you implied I wrote.

I hate to say it but its cash for my younger brother and sister.
I refuse to buy them junk, which is what is on their list. If they choose to purchase junk with cash so be it. But I will not be a direct enabler - only semi direct and I am ok with that.
Parents - one trip was enough to almost put me in the poor house especially sicne there will likely be no bonus next year - so this year its Bernard Calebeat chocolates or something else food wise under $100.
For the g/f - I am still not sure what to get someone you have dated for 5 months. I will be aimlessly walking around Market mall on Saturday looking, and if not there then Chinook on Sunday.

Ya, I did extrapolate abit. But you did word it as though you would be disappointed with someone donating to charity in your name.
It just bugs me that Christmas has become all about 'getting' presents and less about giving(not meaning you in particular Sliver, just in general). I don't think it's douchy at all to do something nice for someone in someone elses name.

I agree with you that the what-can-I-get attitude is lame. I was trying to say there is pleasure in giving a thoughtful gift that somebody will apprectiate (I clearly didn't do a good job of it ) but I think we are on the same page on that front.
I still do think giving a donation in somebody else's name is douchy in the manner the one poster was describing (ie while sitting on her high horse lol).

Why do you care? They probably think half of the crap on your list is junk, but I bet they'll get you something you like. If it makes them happy, then so be it. I guess it would be worse if you flat out got them something they didn't like and told them they'd like it better, but this just reeks of being a self-important control-freak.

Yeah, I wouldn't even open the card if that's what I knew I was getting every year.

I am in the same boat, 5 months in and no idea what to get.
The other gifts are going to be a shared venture with my sisters

It doesn't get any easier when you're two years in - just more expensive.

Take her out to dinner and a show.... whatever floats her boat - live jazz, ballet, theater, opera, cannibal corpse concert, etc.
That or malt liquor and lots of it.

$50 is a good amount. I spent more last year and my mom actually returned the gift and ended up giving me the money back. That was awkward. Although this year she is asking for the exact same thing I gave her last year (digital picture frame). I don't get it, and don't know what to do.
My Dad is hard to shop for because I can't go the gift certificate route because he lives in a different country. He also buys everything that he actually needs himself.
He is going to be retiring the week after Christmas, so a recent retiree gift might be good.
My brother & sister-in-law recently had their first child, I'll probably just buy the baby some books and a stuffed animal. I don't know what to get them though. Mall certificate?

What I like to do is see what they like at the end of August and kind of start taking notes on my cellphone. That way I have a decent list to pick from come Christmas if I need it. Think of something of significance that you two have done together. Places you've been, things you've done, that sort of thing. Even if it's just getting a movie you guys saw together and making a movie night out of it. Basket with a new blanket, some popcorn, said movie, and that way you guys can have a night to yourself. Something like that.
The girlfriend this year is getting a Starbucks mug she wanted, Dwight Schrute bobblehead and a tee shirt she wanted earlier, but couldn't afford. I'm also helping her pay for her flight back home with me. Last year I went and got her a nice white gold diamond pendant.
I really don't know what to ask for myself. I feel bad if I ask for a videogame or something, but I also have most of what I need. The only real thing I'd love is for another hour in a day, or maybe a bit of money. A nice dress shirt and tie from the parents, and I think my sister got me the Flames Greatest Playoff Games DVD set.
Temporary_User, maybe look for some noise cancelling headphones when they need a few moments to themselves? Or maybe a gift certificate to the Keg or something, and then you can watch the baby for the night?
Hope that helps you guys out...

You could suggest instead of gifts they become mini venture capitalists and give a loan to someone on kiva.org. It's sort of like Suzles donkey donation.
