To avoid this you can quit the game before 2 minutes game time (ie. quit before 18). The quit won't count against your DNF or your stats.

Personally, I think NHL10 is a great game, but it's just not very intuitive. I play online and I find I'm able to score in lots of ways. For example, when in the slot, I won't score by doing a wristshot. I have to pull to the side and back and do a hard snapshot, picking for the corners or the sides. I also have to gauge which player is doing the shot. If it's Iginla, his chances of scoring and hitting the net are a lot higher.

I can also score with slapshots from the point. It's best to have a screen and even better if your players tip it. Then I have to decide where to shoot it. I find if there are lots of players in the shooting lane, it's best to shoot low to get it through their legs. If you have a player to tip, I shoot it in the middle so he can tip it down. If you have a screen and a good shooter like Phaneuf or Lidstrom, sometimes I'll shoot high so I can just beat the goalie clean.

I also use the board play and dumps. You have to watch where the defense is positioned to choose your dump-ins and you have to do it while your players are speeding through the neutral zone. On the breakout, if I stop, or turn around, then all my players will stop too. For example, if I find that the defense is overloaded on my side as I get to the red line, it's best to dump it hard around the boards or flip it over to the opposite side.

I also don't find the lift stick overly effective. You can only lift the stick when the other player is very close to you. Otherwise, it becomes a hook or a high stick. I just try to pass the puck around so that the other players don't get close enough to lift the stick or poke check.
