Do you have the "Product Recovery Disk"?

Edit: Here is the part of the manual I am looking at:
Quote:
1.Load the Product Recovery disc in the drive and turn off the computer’s
power.
2.Switch on the computer and, when the In Touch with Tomorrow
TOSHIBA prompt appears, press the F12 key to display the Boot Menu.
3.Use the up or down cursor key to select the CD-ROM/DVD drive in the
display menu.
4.Follow the on-screen instructions.

Try taking the battery out, then replace it and and try again.

It sounds like things are getting worse and worse, which would indicate your laptop has just about died.

yeah i think it's a piece of crap. You think if I took it somewhere for a diagnostic test they'd find anything? I hate to waste a new HDD!

If you've only had the HDD a few days you may be able to return it.

If you can't get the laptop to make it to POST then there isn't a whole heck of a lot you can do. Desktops you can replace a bunch of things piecemeal, on laptops besides memory, battery or HDD there isn't a whole lot you can do.

If taking the battery out and putting it back in didn't do anything, try taking out the memory and turning it on. It should beep at you. That is a good thing - it is getting to the point where it wants memory. If it doesn't get that far then I'd start looking for a replacement. If it does get that far then it may be memory going bad. Crappy thing is you don't want to buy memory just to test out that hypothesis (or if you do, make sure you can return it if that isn't the problem.

After that, I'm out of ideas.

If your laptop screen was still good you may be able to sell it. Typically a new screen on a laptop is as expensive to replace as a new computer, so if you sell your dead system for parts (the screen) you may be able to get a few dollars.

Can you do a 1 post explanation of what now happens.

Get rid of the Toshiba CD - just with the Windows XP CD.

Boot, full format, install and list what happens.

If I boot with my Windows XP CD I still get stuck at "Setup is Starting Windows" I believe from reading these posts that I'm supposed to trick it into booting in IDE mode but my BIOS settings don't allow that (cause Phoenix BIOS sucks).

It worked! Thanks to everyone for their help!
I'm still not sure why XP doesn't work but Vista does. Was my XP version too old?
Anyways, don't care... woohoo!!!

Yay! I was beginning to wonder if this was a psychology experiment, and we were your unwitting lab rats.

I didn't mean to trouble anyone, honest!

It was a learning experience for me.
