I'm cool with the medals. Sure, represent the "aboriginal" style (is that ok to say?) with it, no problem. I'm as proud a Canadian as they come, but I respect the natives and the history of the country. It's the damn Olympics, you represent your history as a nation.

it seems pretty obvious that the native art is a theme for the whole games in Vancouver, and i don't really see a problem with that. i don't remember a lot of native art in the Calgary or Montreal games, so let Vancouver run a theme that's recognizable for their area

I know from personal experience that natives provide a positive and lasting influence on today's Canada. Just go to Regina and Winnipeg, and let the local natives give you a wonderful tour of their ancestral homes and observe the progress they as a culture have made, it will astound you!

[quote=flip;2096868]I knew some bleeding heart wouldn't be able to resist. Who ever said aboriginals didn't contribute to Canadian culture. Do you even know why our country is called CANADA?
On that note, I can almost guarantee you that much of this so called "honoring" the aboriginals is in response to the fact that Canada has taken some serious international heat for our treatment of aboriginal people in the last 50-100 years (Oka Crisis anyone?) and this is our BS facade to make the world think everything here at home is honky dory and that us and the natives are all friends.
Yum! Another slice of irony, please!

Those medals look ######ed, bottom line. Look like they've been held over a bunson burner to long.

Medal shapes and designs look really cool, I like them a lot.
Just not a fan of the absolute pandering to the natives here and using their artwork ad nauseam in everything though.

Out of curiosity, what would you rather see as a design element? I don't think it's 'pandering' for VANOC to have made the choice to go with an aboriginal theme for their overall design of the artistic elements to the games, and I think that once that choice is made, they need to go all the way with it or the whole thing ends up looking disjointed.
If they tried to include every culture that made a contribution to Canada in some way THAT would be pandering. As it is, it was a design choice that was made years ago and they are following through on.
Calgary's olympic medal was also very 'aboriginal' in its design:

I'm not really a fan of aboriginal art in general, so I can't say I'm a fan. But it doesn't affect me either way since it's not like I'm going to win a medal, so I don't really care either way. I personally think the medals are ugly, but that's just my opinion.

I'm not sure why everyone's getting their panties in a knot over this... its not like any of you will be winning one of these medals anytime soon.

Winning? No.
But I suspect there are a few here who are looking into alternate methods to get their grubby little hands on one.

I think the waviness is supposed to represent the ocean, at least thats what it brought to mind for me.

Good catch. I think the medals do represent the PNW, which VANOC would have likely emphasized to procure the Olympics in the first place. Aboriginal art was part of the sales pitch (for lack of a better term), but also captures much of what the Vancouver scene is about. And let's face it - in some respects, the Olympics are Vancouver's not Canada's. Plus, there is a lot of Canadiana in the medals even if it's not immediately apparent, such as the materials and manufacturing process.
Anyway, I like that each medal is unique and part of the broader design. I also really like the Paralympic medals - the square element and the braille are really cool imo.

The medals look fantastic! I really like that they are different, they look great. If they came out with the same crap as everyone else people would be complaining that they put no thought into it and recreated someone else's work. I proud of Vancouver and Canada hosting this event, I like our jerseys, our team Canada clothing and I think instead of bitching about money or anything else we should enjoy the games and celebrate Canada, the greatest country in the world.
