I have to strongly disagree, that piano was horrible (unless it picks up after the 4:00 mark). Like rookie horrible... has she been playing piano for very long?

I just don't understand what was captivating about that performance, I truly can't see it. I'm not being a Debbie Downer, I'm just confused.

Some people are easily impressed. So she can play piano. Is that whats its come to? We are supposed to be impressed that our pop stars can actually play an instrument now? Still not a very good song. Thumbs down.

You know, I end up watching a lot of what I think are kind of ridiculous Chinese and Shanghainese variety shows and talent contests on TV at my in-laws place. I generally think that they're more than a little cheesy and ridiculous. When I watch that SNL bit though, I think most of what I see here is actually pretty good in comparison with the state of music back in North America if that's what's going on.

Congratulations on being able to sing. Fine voice, but the outfit was stupid and the whole act looked awkward. There was nothing to be impressed by in that as far as I can see. I agree with the poster who wrote that it's a shame when you have to give a performer great respect for actually showing some small modicum of talent.

EDIT: To note, that is the first I have ever actually seen or heard Lady Gaga. I had no idea who she was before seeing this video.

I think you last few posters are missing the point, in that she actually came across as an entertainer... instead of just some tired old piece of fake, lip-syncing plastic like almost everything else in the pop world is these days.

The gist of this thread is about how the OP thought Lady Gaga was just another piece of plastic, and then realized that she actually was able to sit down and just perform and entertain. Also, she ad-libbed probably 90% of her performance in front of the piano... while the words were just simply quirky and fun, and probably won't alter the entire course of history... the fact that she is even able to do that puts her on another level from pretty much 95% of the crap you hear on the "pop" stations today.

I'd even be willing to wager that it's even more than those "acts" you might be watching on those Chinese variety shows.

Anyway... earth-shattering, no... but it's not like any of these people, regardless of how many instruments they play, are performing brain surgery or putting out fires or jumping in front of bullets... so, you know, reception is relevant I guess.

Edit: Also... as for the bit about critiquing her piano playing in that clip... Seriously? She's opening for a network TV comedy show. Did you really expect Beethoven's 5th?

Entertainer or whatever, it was an alright performance, a little different than what she's known for, but really... hardly memorable.

Seriously, that was really really bad, I wouldn't normally ever listen to crap like that the whole way through.

The best marketed crap on the market today, that's the best she can do. That's interesting? Have I got a deal for you, I've got this hundred million dollar inheritance coming but I need some money to cover to legal fees, so if you could send me like 1,000 dollars I'll give it back to you ten times, promise.

Writing songs for the P***ycat Dolls? I mean sure, the songs are what they are best known for...
Yeah writing hit songs is super easy I'm sure you are diving into your millions of dollars right now from all the money you've made writing top 10 hits.

She's got talent, but I can't see her without remembering that Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-flames playoff song. So I'll hate her forever.

Man, people's expectations of what's impressive in pop-music has sunk pretty low. Remember the days when people didn't cream their pants over an "artist" (god i hate that term) being able to sing decently and play their own instrument, because it was you know, expected as a basic fundamental standard?

There's nobody even on the level of ABBA these days....and those guys were as pop as it comes.

I thought her performance made up for her skit with Madonna... that was painfull to watch. Yet the skit with Sandberg at the end of the show was priceless... one of the funniest things they've done so far this season. (I am aware they are only 2 shows in...)

Yeah it's nothing earth-shattering. It was just refreshing to see. I certainly can't play like that on the fly. She threw in some interesting bits of jazz and classical in there, and the music was phrased nicely, so it wasn't just your typical three-chord four/four-timed pop cookie cutter stuff. Plus she did a good job of playing to the local crowd rather than sticking to set lyrics.

Was the playing and singing 100% clean? Maybe not. But the audience clearly enjoyed it, and that's really all you can ask for.

Good on her. Didnt watch the vid the first few times (because I didnt care), but boredom won out and I did. Thought she did a better job than many of SNLs other music acts.

This Nardwuar interview convinced me that she is, in fact, completely sincere, intelligent and passionate about her art. Thats right, 'art'.

i love nardwaur interviews, he's great at getting his interviewees to show their true selves. It's also one of the best 'doot-do-do-loot-do's, skip ahead to 9:10.
