If you're new to victoria, you'll get to know these wolf spiders well, they're pretty much everywhere, you should expect to see one or two a month.
Oh, and that guy there, that's a little one.
Have fun in that basement suite!

Oh yeah, he's definitely not the biggest one I've seen. The only reason I posted him was because of how red he was. I've seen plenty of wolf spiders. They like to scurry across the floor in front of me when I'm having a late-night Xbox session. I only kill them if I see them during the daytime because my girlfriend tends to freak out when she says them. The creepiest thing about wolf spiders is that the females carry a bunch of little hatchlings on their backs.

I relayed this story on this board some time ago, but it serves as a lesson for all. Should you have any question as to a bite...by all means make your way to the hospital/clinic ASAP. It just isnt worth waiting if there is any doubt. I waited a couple days or so and it ended up being a really bad decision that now will affect me for the rest of my life.

The problem with the Brown Recluse bite in the grand scheme of things is no one really knows what percentage of bites get nasty or even many of the times why they get so bad (is it the bite alone or bite + infection etc).
For the most part though for them to bite you pretty much have to be actively killing them by squishing them as they aren't at all aggressive. But thanks to your story in that other thread I told my wife before we moved down here that I was never EVER crawling around under the house or deck. Someone else can do that for me. And we keep traps along the walls where to bed legs are etc.
I hate spiders.

I LOVE spiders. I would never kill one. Spider webs covered with frost are one of nature's beauties.

Quite sure that the OP's spider is a Hacklemesh Weaver, a very common basement-dweller in the PNW. They are very non-aggressive and not particularly venomous. I think they're one of the more attractive spiders with their velvety abdomens and interesting patterns. See BugGuide for more info, but the photo wasn't clear enough to ID to species level.

Yeah. For your sake, pray that its not. When I was 4, I was bitten by a brown recluse spider (and did not notice). First my leg (from the thigh to the knee) turned red, as if there was a rash. Then the redness went away but a brown patch the size of the new apple computer mice formed. Eventually that fell off by itself and I saw the inside of my leg. For anyone interested, under our skin is a perfect series of red dots in a natural pattern (laid out like bricks) on a chicken soup colored jelly. Now there is only dead skin and a scar the same size, and it has been 15 years.

Fix that spelling mistake please.
There's not actually a spelling mistake, I just want people to re-read that over and over.

I think Stump above has it right, it looks exactly like a Hacklemesh Weaver.
And your story is nasty! Man... That's rough. I think only a few suffer from necrosis like that, though. But, man... I assume you went to the doctor, right?

Oh, and wolf spiders hunt in packs, that's where they get their name, so if you see this guy, there are probably a couple other ones waiting. This guy may have been 'bait,' so to speak, to lure you into a trap. If it IS a wolf spider.
|
"Wolf" Spider is actually a catch-all term that denotes a huge variety of spiders which are similar only in that they generally 'hunt' as opposed to building webs and waiting for dinner.
I'm not sure if this is 'technically' a wolf-spider, I heard a number of different ways to describe them when I lived in vic, everything from "small tarantula", which may be true as they have a body-structure that is very tarantula like, to the afformentioned 'hobo spider' but pretty much everyone just calls them "Wolf Spiders".
Generally they are darker, my guess it that this particular one just molted and its exoskeleton is still soft - which would explain why it wasn't running anywhere, it was waiting for its body to harden!
Oh, and it's totally not a Hacklemesh Weaver, though that is an interesting looking spider.
