Rogers' version of the iPhone? It's locked to Rogers' network so you'd have to unlock it, but it would be able to communicate on the new Telus/Bell network.
Unless Telus/Bell is going to restrict unlocked phones from their network.

So question.. not sure if this has been asked.
With Telus and Bell upgrading their networks to handle GSM, and since Rogers towers do not have a lot of coverage in rural areas. Assuming that the Telus/Bell towers will be highly prevalent in the rural areas, could we come to a situation where someone on the Rogers/Fido network could be roaming on Telus/Bell network inside the country?

From what I've heard, the Rogers iPhone is supposed to work on the Telus network. Don't know more details though.
I wonder if this 'high speed' network will also be setup in the country as well. Or if like Rogers, Telus will just stay in the major cities.

I am very excited about this news. Telus has a sign-up so you can get early news on the iPhone on their network.

That depends on if Telus is upgrading their entire network, or just portions of it, or if they're upgrading cities first and then country areas later. I haven't seen new coverage maps or anything.
And even then, would Rogers and Telus/Bell form such a business agreement? If you are Telus/Bell, what benefit would that be?

That just means that the iPhone used on Telus will the the same kind as the one used on Rogers; a GSM phone.
Rogers' iPhones are locked to Rogers, you can't take a Rogers iPhone and put in an at&t SIM and have it work on at&t's network, and you won't be able to take a Rogers iPhone and put in a Telus SIM card and have it work either.
You might be able to if you unlock the Rogers iPhone, but that depends on how Telus implements things.

Well Rogers currently goes beyond the major cities now, but I also wonder how far out Telus is building their GSM network. My gut tells me that for the apparent pending launch it will be for major cities only to start with, but then again I was reading about other carriers that have made the wholesale switch for their entire network pretty rapidly. Though I don't know if they had to contend with the huge spaces that Canada does for rural coverage.

Telus and Bell would really benefit from being able to offer the iPhone all over Alberta on a high speed network.
Combined with good data plans they could create one hell of a good deal.

Telus/Bell to get iPhone in November
Can only be good news for Rogers/Fido costumers
It will be running on the new HSPA network.
Confirming a report from Monday, both Bell Canada and Telus Corp. announced Tuesday that they will begin selling Apple's iPhone for their networks in November. The news officially brings to an end the exclusivity Rogers Communications has had on the handset for over a year.
Telus and Bell both released brief statements, confirming that they have reached an agreement with Apple to bring both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS to Canada. Pricing and availability were not immediately available, but are said to be forthcoming in a matter of weeks. For more information, visit telusmobility.com/iphone, bell.ca/network or bell.ca/reseau.
The two carriers have partnered on upgrading its network to iPhone-compatible HSPA standard. Both providers previously operated on a CDMA cell network that is incompatible with the GSM-based iPhone. The debut of Apple's smartphone is said to coincide with the launch of the HSPA network.

Eeeeppp.. Two things:
1. This is just asking for trouble to launch the GSM network and the iPhone at the same time. It'll likely be the majority product using the infrastructure, and I'd put money on there being problems, which means unhappy customers.
2. Don't expect the same level of rural support for GSM that exists currently on Telus/Bell. The cities will definitely get the infrastructure requirements first, then the rural.

...and some people didn't think the iPhone would change the world. Anyone want to go back to the way things used to be in the mobile world before the iPhone?

The plan is for the same rural support for GSM that todays customers get for EVDO. Alberta is one of the huge benefactors for this as our province's EVDO coverage is extensive due to oil sands and business coverage.

So my Bell contract is up at the end of the year. I'm not looking for an Iphone, but does this mean that Bell will actually offer some regular, non-smartphones with sim cards? If I get a friend to send me a sweet Nokia from Europe, will it work?

I imagine they would have regular GSM phones as well. As to the unlocked phone, hard to say at this point. One would think so, but you never know.

Here is my question, I currently have a bell BB. Once the HSPA towers are active will that also boost the CDMA signal also? Will any new towers contain both HSPA and CDMA? I really hope so since currently i don't get reception at home. Anyone have any idea?

The HSPA and CDMA are completely different, so adding HSPA isn't going to boost CDMA at all. The new towers could contain both, but if you don't get CDMA currently I'd wager the chances that you'd get GSM when they turn it on as pretty unlikely, unless you're just in a dead spot in a densely populated area.

Hmmmm, ya that is what I am worried about. After months and months of complaining I was told that they were putting a new tower up that would help out the dead spots in edgemont. Here is to hoping something improves in Nov. Thanks for your answer photon.

Yeah if you are in the city it could very well be better coverage on their GSM network where you are.
