At 6.2 million, that would be something like 4-6 dollars a year for every wage earner. Insignificant.

His math was off. 1264 * 500,000 = 632,000,000.00.... not really insignificant.

Why do you consider smoking around kids worse than smoking around other adults?

Legalize (and tax) weed. Would also thin out the gang population.

Do you seriously need me to explain this?
I will anyways.
Imagine you have your three year old kid with you in your Ford Tempo and you pull out a cigarette. I'm no scientist but I'm pretty sure your kid isn't gonna tell you to put out your cigarette or leave the car.
Adults have the CHOICE to be in a smoking environment thanks to new laws. Kids do not. (although I'm pretty sure there is a new law banning smoking with kids in the car?) But i see it everyday anyways.
I'm shocked you needed someone to tell you this.

I used to be a smoker, and loved every minute of it. It wasn't until I had quit and some time had passed that I realized how terribly disgusting the habit was! I used to throw butts wherever. I figured they are better on the street than messing up my car. They are small enough on the sidewalk as to not bother anyone. It didn't occur to me that I could burn down a small town with what I was doing. I was also a teenager at the time, and I'm guessing I thought it was pretty cool to do all this.
Fate got me back a couple times, once I threw a butt out the window and it came back in and fell between my legs. I was wearing shorts at the time and driving stick. I had to push pull force on my clutch and on my gas to raise my behind off the seat, steer with one hand while I fished for the fiery butt. Another time, I flicked one out the window, successfully, I thought. Until I arrived at work when someone looked at me in horror, pointing and saying, "WHATS THAT?!". A butt smoldering in my hair, that's what it was.
Now, I am passive aggressive and hold my breath loudly and say, "$#%# that's GROSS" as I walk through a wall of smoke. What WAS I thinking as a kid?!

Now you've done it.
I recently watched a marijuana 'report' from ABC, NBC or one of other major american networks, that stated that marijuana was the most profitable illegal drug. Getting space is difficult and start up costs are high, but the first crop alone will pay for the all the start-up equipment. Full harvests can then be done every 2 months with insignificant operational costs. People will buy a $1M home for the sole purpose of growing weed in it, and make off like bandits in the process. Also, waaaaay more people smoke weed than do coke/crack/heroin in Canada.
Legallizing weed would directly take truckloads of money away from the criminal element and give it to the gov't and private business, while also saving money in law enforcement and rehabilitation. The main reason it's still 'technically' illegal in canada is US relations.
You ever heard of doing your homework?

Actually weed is the biggest money maker for gangs. If it wasn't, then they wouldn't bother with all those risky grow-op houses.

The government cant even supply a small amount medicinal marijuana and cant control contra-band cigarettes.
Do some research on countries that have decriminalized marijuana. Organized crime has continued to profit in those nations.
If the Canadian government sold weed it would be $50 for half a gram of crap while you could still get better stuff cheaper from your neighbourhood dealer.
Look at at the amount of tax in booze and smokes. The government will add that tax to the cost of weed. You dont think gangs will continue to grow if they can undercut the price of the government?

Some idiot smoker doubled my commute time today. You have to be a total moron to throw your cigarette butt out of your window into the brush on the side of the freeway. Today, we were treated to a brush fire. Its a giant display of stupidity.
I was in a discussion with some friends about smokers over the weekend. I know there were more smokers when I was a kid, but I feel subjected to more smoke now and we couldn't figure out why. I think it comes down to courtesy. I used to hear people say "do you mind if I smoke?" a lot as a kid, but never anymore. Now, you leave a movie or a hockey game and there's a crowd stuck on a corner waiting for the crosswalk light and a smoker will light up in the middle of a hundred people and assume it won't bother anyone.
I get that smokers have the right to their disgusting habit. I'm not sure why that entitles them to be a nuisance to everyone around them. Throwing the butts on the ground is just being a pig. Maybe I should start spitting my gum out on the ground, its small, it won't be that noticeable.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but I've heard that in Japan people carry around a small pocket case for their cigarette butts. Why this doesn't catch on is beyond me, but maybe it's illegal there to throw a butt.
I can't believe how many people empty their vehicle ashtrays in parking lots. You probably wouldn't do it on your driveway, but the parking lot is OK?

Doing my homework? Please...you are delusional if you think marijuana makes more money than coke and crack.
1g of bud= $10
1g of coke= $120
Coke and especially crack are more addicting than weed. You seriously think that Gangs make more money selling weed than coke and crack? If you do then you fail.
Ask a drug dealer that you know and I'm sure you must know at least one what makes more and i can guarantee you that they will say coke and crack make more.
You forgot to mention all the crack factories that happen in Calgary but never get busted. Marijuana houses are a lot easier to get busted and that's why you only hear about them in the news.

The gov't can just license out growing weed, if it's legal like alcohol, there is no reason for the gov't to be involved in the distribution process besides collecting their sweet, sweet tax money.
An amount of weed equal to $10 pack of cigarettes could go for ~$60. Private industry is more than capable of underselling the dealers. Cannabis Sativa grows like, well, weed and they can also sell hemp, which has a myriad of valuable uses.

Threads like this make me want to throw my butts on the ground just to annoy people.
As we've been through many times on CP, to me the extremely anti smoking crowd just want something to complain about. I also dislike inconsiderate people and I'm could create a dozen threads on the things that annoy me. However I like to think that when it comes to things that annoy me I'm not just as inconsiderate back to them.
Let me be clear I think that people have the right to avoid smoke and litter just as people have the right to smoke. My point here is that something about this topic makes people completely polarized and get very angry about things that in the grand scheme of things are fairly minor.
In some cases peoples attitudes are no different than people egging on a person with severe road rage. Sure I hate bad driving but I don't scream at and belittle every bad driver I see. I just deal with it and move on.
Not saying it is all of CP that has this attitude but the high horse and holier than thou comments seem to be front and center when smoking comes up.
Something about smoking that makes a small group of people act like compete aholes and as such makes me less likely to be courteous just out of spite. I guess the fact that I casually smoke means I'm automatically a hindrance and degenerate in society who needs to be systematically wiped out makes me a little bit defensive. The common misconception that anyone who enjoys having a smoke is a piece of trash is a pretty demeaning.
I'll admit it seems that not everyone feels this way but much like the anti abortion people the stupid seems to drown out the sensible and all I hear are the ludicrous complaints and anti smoker rhetoric.
For the rest of you who are polite about not wanting smoke near you and litter, I'm sorry but until the aholes quit pissing me off I'm not going to change.
That being said I rarely throw my butts on the ground and don't have kids to smoke around but I'm sure some of the anti smoking Nazis could find something I do worth complaining about or telling me certain places I can't smoke even if I'm not inconveniencing anyone.

What you may not realize is that Canadian gangs trade marijuana across the border for cocaine and heroin. Marijuana is therefore not only a large source of income for gangs as a result of sales, but much of the money Canadian gangs make by selling cocaine and heroin is actually directly attributable to marijuana.
