He is an awesome drummer, but yes the video isn't that impressive.

So I guess I don't get how a DJ who is respected in the DJ community qualifies as a "celebrity". Other than he performed for other people who shoudn't be celebrities either.
And if an NFL player died, that's what he would be referred to. And it wouldn't be featured on the evening news outside of the sports section. So...

I disagree, whenever a player in any professional league aka NFL, NHL, MLB etc, dies it makes it to the actual news, and not just the sports section.

Depends on the market - if, for example, a Calgary Flame died suddenly, I would expect it to be all over the local news. I think if an NFL player died, it would not make the local news here. That only happens when NFL players get arrested.

So your issue is with the word "celebrity"? Ok fine, lets say he wasn't a celebrity then.
But saying you don't understand why people give a rats ass, and saying he shouldn't be called a celebrity is 2 very different things.

The argument about celebs and our obsession is a valid one but please guys some of us did enjoy this guys music and it's just plane rude to add to this thread with that nonsense. Save it for a few days later at least, but for fans of the guy I'd rather not have to half the bs in this thread
RIP

Korey Stringer died about 8 years ago ... I not only remember his name but I hate football. It was pretty big news and it was all over local media.

Did Steve McNair make the local news?
If Brett Favre were to be found dead from a suspected overdose, would there be a lot of people who wouldn't know who he was?

I don't know anything about DJ AM but I found out he was in Crazy Town, performers of the one hit wonder, Butterfly. Say what you will about the song, but the choice to sample the Red Hot Chilli Peppers' "Pretty Little Ditty" was genius.

I never knew he was in CrazyTown nor did I ever realize that Butterfly sampled Pretty Little Ditty. I guess I haven't listened to Mother's Milk in a LONG time.

Is it still considered "strange" to hear about a celebrity dying of an overdose?
