For a lot iPhone users, the app management changes to iTunes are a huge boon. The granduer of the event aside, this is some of the best news I've seen in a while.

Having said that, the best part of the whole thing was seeing Steve back on stage.

I much prefer the new itunes layout. The store was getting so bloated with content that they had to change it up.

I'm a little shocked Jobs came back for this event ... I would have thought they'd throw him a few cheeseburgers to fatten up for the tablet announcement in January (speculation of course).

No one thought it was news that Steve jobs had some poor kid assassinated so he could steal the liver? Or is that only bad when bill gates does it

Very disappointed in having no major updates to the iPod touch line but from a business standpoint it makes sense. Why make major changes when you can add some storage space and cut prices to keep selling at the same rate? They did something similar with the MacBooks at the last event. This article from Gizmodo sums it up pretty well and gives a bunch of reasons why there's no camera in the new iPod touch contrary to rumors..

Quote:
• iPhone Cannibalization: The other explanation is cannibalization. This is a good one too. Add a camera to the iPod touch and, boom, the iPhone loses yet another advantage over its lesser brother. So maybe putting the iPhone's camera into the iPod touch is feasible. Apple may just be protecting the market for the iPhone.
• Feature Evolution: This, to me, is the most reasonable explanation. Apple is getting oh-so-lazy. Or, better said, greedy. They are the number one player in every single category. They own the market. And they know the competition is just catching on. So instead of releasing an iPhone that is way better than the previous model, they release the modest upgrade of the iPhone 3GS. And instead of releasing an iPod touch with a nice camera, they just slap some new software, slightly updated guts and more memory.

The biggest news of the day was Steve's return

iPhone cannibalization is BS. Your either in the market for a new phone or not. Macbooks don't cannibalize the sales of Mac Pros. Who would ever go into an Apple store for an iPhone and see that the touch's have a camera and go 'That's the one. I really wasn't sold on actually being able to call people on it anyways. I just want to play Tetris and take pictures.'

Someone crapped the bed on getting a camera into the iPod Touch in time.

The Nano can't take still pictures BTW. I have really been shaking my head at Apple these days.

I do have to replace my 2G Nano at some point soon due to crap battery life, do retailers put the previous, now "obsolete" versions of the Ipods on immediate clearance?
Yeah, I just got the 4th gen nano for 169.99 today, instead of the reg 199.99.

This is a technical/physical size limitation with the image sensor - a still image sensor is too thick for the Nano's case design.

So they could have done three things:
1. left the camera off, and let the product stagnate another year
2. made the case thicker, which you know Apple will never do from an aesthetic point of view
3. filled the available space with the best available sensor, which does video only in this case

Not sure Apple could have made everyone happy with any of the three options, but certainly having something new, rather than nothing, is the best out of the three.

There is no reason why a camera that takes 30 fps can't in firmware take one frame and call it a photograph. My 9 year old Digital 8 video camera can do that. The only reason they didn't do it is so that they didn't have to advertise they put a 0.3 megapixel camera in the Nano's tech specs.

Jobs used to be king of the product features matrix. I haven't seen one in years. Their features are all over the place.

Apple products are starting to remind me of my Grand Cherokee. Heated power mirrors but crank windows. WTF?
