4x4, Zarathustra is talking about pickups trucks in the city. Not a country in general. Pickup trucks are useful, just not entirely in urban environments if they're not being used the way they should. They hog space, resources and are wasteful when you're driving short distances hauling nothing.

Relax, man....No one is telling you to not enjoy your pickup truck - in fact, go nuts and have fun. Just don't be one of those urbanites driving big vehicles for no reason.

Thanks for the clarification. He sounded pretty douchy to me, so this is a welcomed reply.

I have owned some sort of a truck for over 25 years, and this is the first time I find myself without one, and it sucks......
the things I miss the most are:
being able to throw the dogs in the back without worry (topper equipped or Blazer)
Doing any type of home reno
Heading out to Mcleans whenever I felt like it
Hauling something to the dump if needed
Having much more mobility freedom during/after heavy snowstorms
Easy to work on

In my opinion, every homeowner should have one..

Let me tell you about my plan to exterminate all pickup trucks in Calgary within the next 15 years.

At least we'll still have dogs to pull wagons full of stuff around for us.

1. Who do you call when you need help moving? Now that I know you have a big truck...
2. Who do you call when you've made a large purchase and need help bringing it home? My brother and his love van.
3. How do you think tradesmen move their tools around the city and bring them to your house to fix whatever thing it is that's broken? I assume they creep out of the sewers.
4. What do you think of your beloved hockey heros that drive big trucks "for no reason"? I assume they have trucks to carry their egos.
5. Why do you assume that because it's clean and empty that it's always clean and empty? Guys that actually use their trucks rarely shine the chrome or play crappy dance music at 1000 decibels.
6. Are you aware that the V8 in your grandpa's Crown Victoria is just as bad on gas as the V6 in my truck? My grampa is dead and they don't let him drive.
7. Do you still hate me after I pull over and drag your car over the snow hump that the city grader left on your side street? Yes because that means I have to go to work instead of claiming a snow day.
8. Do you realize that for most people it's not feasible to own the necessary pickup truck plus a Prius to boot around town in when not hauling things? You should work 3 jobs so you can conform to my expectations.
9. Have you ever owned a pickup truck and discovered all their uses? Yes, but I prefer to spend my weekends comatose instead of carting around stuff for everyone I know, so I sold it.
10. Did your redneck, pickup-driving father beat you as a child? My father was too busy beating up your dad to discipline me as I deserve.

I've hauled full-sized sofas in my minivan. And drywall. And 12' dimensional lumber. All without any risk of rain or snow damage. Plenty o room for the dogs as well. I'll be expecting you to trade in your pickup any day now.

As for moving, we've done this many times in our life, and my experience with pickup trucks is that they suck ash for moving. Why make 10 trips when you can just rent a Uhaul and get it done in one shot?

Of course a truck is useful, just don't need it for everyday use. I'm sure few people actually need them that way, but as a homeowner, I enjoy the communal truck my family shares, so that if a 'big' job is needed, it's there. It's a clunker, but that means you never have to feel bad about taking it to the dump - it fits right in!

I have a bigger problem with the Saskatchewan plate asses on highway 9 then I ever will with pickup drivers in Alberta.

What I love is every so often I'll be at Home Depot grabbing some lumber, somebody will see me trying to fit 8' 2X4s into my Grand Am and will stop to laugh. Then it usually turns to shock as they see the lumber fits nicely inside my car as I close the trunk.

The comment earlier about not being able to afford a second vehicle for non-truck related excursions makes sense to me. A buddy has been parking his old beat up truck at my place for the last couple of years, and I have found it very handy to have around. So much so that now that we are looking at getting a car for my fiancee, I am considering giving her the Grand Am and I will buy a truck for myself.

So yes, you may see it parked at the Park & Ride lot; and used for other purposes where a car could also be used.

I find as a relativley new home-owner, my truck comes in handy for all the crap you have to buy to fill your house and yard. I have had to haul dirt, wood chips, lawnmowers, bbq's, building materials, furniture etc..and I feel sorry for those folks who have to try and cram stuff into the trunks of their cars at the hardware store.

That being said, I find there are way too many massive heavy duty diesel trucks in Calgary that people drive around because of the "status" that it communicates........

I love backing my F-350 up to the loading area at Ikea. Step out, lower the end gate, throw in the boxes, close the end gate and drive away. All the people tying their boxes to the hoods of their cars with twine just stare at you with envy.

In fact if you want to amuse yourself if your bored following your wife around Ikea. Go out to the loading area and watch people trying to tie big boxes to the hoods of their little cars. Or try to fit big long boxes into their mini van or SUV. Its pretty entertaining.

I just have one question. I grant you that trucks are useful and if you wish to commute from McKenzie Towne to Downtown in an F-350... good for you. But, am I safe in assuming that anyone driving a Hummer H2 or H3 is a loser of biblical proportions?

The month that my brother-in-law had his truck parked at our house last winter was incredibly convenient. We hauled tons of crap out to the dump. We bought a new crib and a bunch of other baby furniture and brought it home with ease. It didn't have a back seat so I couldn't take my kids anywhere (sometimes, that's a bonus).

The only crappy thing, aside from parking at the stupid downtown underground parkades, was paying at the pump.

I dont always have tons of crap in the back of my truck during the week. But almost every weekend my truck is loaded to the gills with stuff I'm taking out to our cabin in bc. Once you have one they are indispensible. I have a dirtbike, camping gear, firewood, people ect to haul around and nothing but a truck will suffice.

4X4 has inspired me to buy a brand new Chevy Silverado to drive to and from my office job downtown. Now I just need to park it in the driveway and wash it everyday with extra wax and soap. This would complete my 3000 sq. foot house 30 km's from downtown with the Canadian flag waving proud on a flag pole out front.
