Bowness is the ultimate example of this. You have muti-million dollar estates along the river and across the street is low-income apartments.
I got to play with Eddie Willis of the Funk Brothers at Hexter's last weekend. He is the primary guitar player in the studio band from Detroit that innovated the Motown sound. His friend Gary Martin (local legend) has been playing Motown in Bowness for eight years now, and every Sunday hundreds of people of all races, religions, ages, preferences, etc etc show up to see the show.
Eddie Willis was so moved by the Bownesian response to him and his music and life legacy, that he wants to come back to play
at Hexters. For those not up to speed, check out "Living In The Shadow of Motown". Eddie Willis and the boys have played on more number 1 recordings than The Beatles, The Beachboys, The Rolling Stones, and Elvis Presley combined.
As far as Cantos goes, this is awesome news. The design is amazing, and will be a key part in making Calgary truly cosmopolitan.
As an aside, Cantos currently hold an all-ages blues jam on the last Monday of every month. I will be bringing one of my co-worker's daughters for the first time this month to check it out. She wants to learn Clarinet, and damn it we need more blues Clarinet players! Some of the kids that play down there are unbelievable.
