So if I mention that the University of Calgary is laying off 200 people before fall and "There is likely to be additional staff and faculty reductions in the future" ... does that mean we need to branch the discussion off into a third thread about layoffs?

Well I'm not sure how your department is run, but you're going to have to explain to me how promoting others is an automatic role change for an exempt management position, with accompanied benefits.

Your firm allows that? Seems incredibly flawed to me, does that happen all the time? If not, I'm not sure why it doesn't.

Did any salary positions get let go or only contractors?

I dont really see how this is a big deal - except for those that got axed (if they were salary employees).

The only ones who got "axed" are contractors. Anyone with full time status is simply getting transferred.

Speaking of the GE5 interchange... can someone please tell me how on earth they managed to leave ONE FRIGGEN LANE available to move traffic that is northbound on McLeod Trail westbound on Glenmore? AND then stuck two major entrances/exits for Chinook Centre in the middle of it?

Holy flying fata that concrete turd drives me nuts.

Well it is a little more complicated than that. We have 18 positions and four people left. When the four left two positions were posted. The remaining two empty positions were re-assigned to supervisory level positions that report to the manager. Effectively splitting the department into two seperate area's (8 people each) that were headed by two supervisors that report to the department manager. In the wake our manager was promoted to a higher ME level. And with any promotion in ME it is accompanied by benefits.

Not really. 13 people with full time jobs got let go. Another 15 were re-assigned back to their original positions. So those 15 re-assignments would knock out whoever took their job in the mean time. In the end, unless their position remained empty, someone gets laid off. So out of the 15 if you estimate that half were filled "limited term" then that's another 8 layoffs, or 20ish total.

Yeah, it's a bit confusing.

So just out of curiosity, does anyone here work in IT for the City of Calgary?

If it's any consolation, the Province of BC and City of Vancouver have been laying people off too. My fiance was a casualty of this as her contract with the province was not renewed.

If you believe the conspiracy theories, many people are blaming the Olympics saying that the province and city have been funneling money to them - hence the cuts.
