I think I have to agree with you on this one. (First time for everything eh.)
Just smacks of him trying to buy some votes or popularity. Find a tax to cut, and suddenly act like a hero.

Does anyone know what the taxes are on a 26 of Rye or a 24pack of beer, before and after this reduction?

The increases were $2.85 more for a 750-millilitre bottle of liquor, $1.30 on a 12-pack of beer and up to 75 cents for wine.

Careful... pretty soon others will be accusing you of walking on the Wild side...

Well with him dipping in popularity, he needs to boost that a bit and if he is still around three years from now, he will need a couple of things he can point to as "positive".

To the best of my knowledge, not even close.

Good for us, but I'm not sure you will notice an immediate drop. Liquour merchants would have bought their stocks when the tax was still in, so they would want to sell off most of that stock to get the profit margin they originally set.

Not to sure about that, as when the tax was 1st introduced, it was effective at midnight on the night of the announcement.

I kind of find it hard to belive that the increased tax was causing a major if any drop in business for a restaraunt.
Seriously, the tax was 11 cents for a bottle of beer, 11 cents for a shot of booze and 15 cents for a galss of wine.
Unless the restaraunt tried to increase their prices more than that and use the tax as an excuse, you'd be hard pressed to convince me that those types of increases made any difference to how many people ordered a beer or glass of wine with dinner.

I'm a student and work part-time at a liquor store, and last night at work we got an email saying all prices must be brought down to their pre tax prices by 6pm the next day. Thank God I'm not working today...

I forget exactly how much prices were supposed to go up, but just for an example, at my place 12'ers were supposed to go up around $3, and we were told to put em up by $5-6. They did this on basically everything. The topper was we then had to tape signs on the till saying prices were increased due to the provincial budget, and if you have a problem with it, consult your local MLA. In other words, they took advantage of a situation and then pawned off the blame on someone else.
That's why I was so curious to see what we'd do when the tax got rescinded yesterday. Our company's so stingy that I was wondering if they'd even do it. I'm still curious how far they'll lower it, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't fully bring them back down to pre-tax levels. My guess is it'll be somewhere in between.

As much as I like cheaper beer, I'm not impressed by Stellmach's dithering. The province is hurting financially and given the billion dollar healthcare defecit, I'd rather he keep the sin tax than cut spending. Again, I love booze but I don't mind a few extra percent on it or smokes if it means funding doesn't get cut.

Yet another sign that Stelmach is in totally over his head. He's not sure what kind of conservative he is... social or fiscal, and dithers in whatever direction the wind was blowing.
Upping the liquor tax was a dumb idea, repealing it so fast was simply an admission of such.
Just like the royalties. Upping them in 2008 when it was clear the US economy was about to recess was incompetent. Trying haphazardly to correct them only proves how dumb he is, and how correct foreign investors are to steer clear of Alberta until someone else is in charge.

Calgary liquor stores slow to react to tax repeal
Quote:
"We're rolling back prices as new product comes in, but we have a lot of product right now that we paid higher tax on," he said. "On key items, we're going to bring the costs down quicker, and we'll be forced to absorb that loss, which I think some other retailers are doing. But for the most part, everyone's waiting for their inventory to clear out."
Julian Koziak, chairman of the Alberta Liquor Industry Roundtable, made a similar statement in a news release.
"As inventory that was priced at the higher taxed level is replaced with lower taxed product, Albertans will see price decrease," he said.

Funny how they forget to mention that prices went up automaticly when the tax was increased

LOL, so by that I should be seeing two prices on the shelves? I mean, they aren't going to wait until the shelves are empty to restock. Still haven't seen a price drop on ANYTHING here in Red Deer.
