Correct, animal collision falls under comp and generally you pay a lower deductible, that's why if there is a deer don't go out of your way to miss it because you wipe your own car out in the ditch you get put under collision which likely is a higher deductible, and it affects your rate in the future because your deemed at fault or responsible for putting your car in the ditch.. unless you have accident forgiveness to counter it.

well personally, I would not want to be in the vehicle that hits a moose, elk, horse etc. Physical damage to the operator of the vehicle looms high in that scenario. Forget about the physical damage to your car and take the ditch.

I think I actually heard from td insurance here so I switched and was then paying only 400 a month, which still was alot for me. In the meantime I got married and paid my car off. I then took it off full coverage since it has such high kms anyways. So now me and the wifey paying only 255 a month with 3 vehicles. Get married.

Just thought I would add that if anyone gets married or in some cases common law to advise your agent as this can often times change your rate class if you are under 25 and will lower your premium....

Correct, along with fire, theft, hail etc. Premium won't be affected but if you rack up a few comp claims the company will likely increase your deductible on you.....

I don't think I could hit a deer even if I tried. There is some kind of auto pilot that clicks in when something runs across the road. I just automatically swerve. And yeah, as red said, I think I'd rather be out a few grand than be in a wheelchair or something.

I got dinged for swerving to miss a deer and wrought off an Explorer when I parked it shiny side down. I had a buddy riding me for weeks about just hitting the damn thing next time. I got my revenge when we were on our way to a transmitter up a back mountain road when he swerved off the road and into a tree trying to avoid a SQUIRREL!!!
Man, I don't I have ever laughed that hard in my life...
In BC I pay roughly $2300 for a new mini van and a corrolla. I just pay out of pocket as I hate paying extra to have it financed...
Anything over $150 a month for one car is insane.

Bad story time...
I was camping with my ex and I was booting around logging roads looking for a newer greater spot. Just bumping along, la de da, and this bird walked across the road in front of me. I had no time to react and no where to swerve even if I had time... So I ran it over. And my g/f went nuts. She started punching me and swearing (god she was hot). But it got worse...
In my rearview I saw the thing flopping around in obvious pain, so I stopped the truck, went and got a big rock and put it out of it's misery. When I got back to the truck, she was crying. It was pretty harsh. I didn't get any for the rest of the trip.

In some parts of Norhtern BC/Alberta this is how they hunt. No need to take a gun grose hunting, just run 'em over with the ole pick 'em up truck and grab your axe...
I miss my pick up truck.

Yeah that's valid I mean if you have a moose or a big elk staring you down I'd be going for the ditch.

Meloche Monnex. There is no other.
|
Had to bump this thread to say thanks for the recommendation.
Bought a truck yesterday, went to the same agent I've used for my motorbikes for the past 7+ years, walked out with a $160/mo insurance payment.
Called Meloche Monex after the fact, all signed in minutes, $98.91/mo.
Had to call back my old agent to cancel immediately, he's getting all pissy with me. Wants me to come in to terminate the policy, says there might be additional fees to cancel. I already paid an extra $50 registration on top of the insurance.
I'm still trying to figure out why I had to pay that $50 fee, do all reputable insurance agents do this or only the schiesters?

It depends... was the term in your insurance policy up? If it was, you don't have to pay anything to move to a different company.

No problemo. I'll continue to sing their praises until they shaft me. Which I suspect will be never. In all my dealings with all kinds of businesses and companies, they're the only one that has been 100% awesome 100% of the time.
Meloche FTW.

Nope, I actually called to cancel 6 hours after it was opened.
I made the mistake of thinking I should stick with my guys, they'll give me a good rate, been with them for 7 years, etc. Hours later when I popped on CP I remembered this thread and Meloche Monnex being praised. Now I'll save $663 this year. Although I will lose the horsecrap $50 fee charged by my old agent just to open the policy, which I now think is a total scam.

Are you alumni for any post secondary (even SAIT or any technical place)? Because I got a further discount for being a SAIT guy and I know that UofC alum get deals as well. Plus, they'll give further discounts if you have your home insurance through them.
I heart Meloche.
edit* I see I've already said this in this very thread. And probably in all the other insurance threads as well. We need a broken record smilie.

My wife lent her car out and the guy got in accident (car was written off) back in 1999.
Neither one of us owned a vehicle until two years ago and insurance agencies continued to quote us $3,000 range for insurance as we haven't had enough consecutive years of insurance. That would put our insurance payment above our car payment. =[
It wasn't until we tried Co-Operators where our insurance ending up being $1,600.
I think it's a good idea to shop insurance rates every single time you are up for renewal. I use a calender to make sure the misses and I shop two months ahead of the policy renewing.

Yep, SAIT Alum also. He explained the discount if I also got home insurance which I have been meaning to get anyways so I signed up. Dropped my vehicle insurance by $47/yr. Not bad.
