My little sister had a hamster that escaped while it was pregnant. A few days later, we found a hamster holocaust in the basement. The mother gave birth and then killed them all by biting them on the head.

Alton Brown recommends crayfish as pets.

I had two gerbils when I was little, they were in the same cage. One died, and the other began eating it. Can't quite look at the little buggers the same way anymore.

What about a ferret or chinchilla? I haven't ever had one or really know anything about them, but thought I would throw out the suggestion...

I thought this general thing was well known regarding hamsters, gerbils, etc. I'm not sure where, but we always grew up with the "don't have them in the same change" or the "if they give birth, get the babies out of there quickly or they will get eaten". Kind of weird to say the least.

That said, I had a hamster or 2 growing up and they were great. When I was a wee little lad I had a gineau pig. We got it midlife from our kindergarten. Man that thing was great. My mom said it would be pretty quiet during the day, chirp a bit....but as soon as we (kids) got home it would start chirping like crazy and get excited in its cage etc. We also would let it out to run around the house a bit; it would run and let us chase it but I don't ever remember it getting away/being too hard to catch. Hortense the gineau pig, what a great pet...

Not 100% on hamsters but with mice 2 males will fight and probably kill each other but you can have several females living together, they prefer the companionship.

The guy at the pet store told us to keep them together in the same cage, as they had "grown up" together. They were completely fine the whole time I had them. They never fought or anything like that. Then one died, and the other started eating. It was disturbing.

Maybe if you had fed them they wouldn't have had to resort to cannibalism.

Ah, see, the guy at the Pet Store never mentioned feeding them.

He didn't? I smell a lawsuit.

Shame you're not American though. If you can win millions from a little hot coffee imagine what you'd get for the emotional scars from witnessing gerbil cannibalism?

Gerbils are far less likely to bite as well.

Get a gerbil. They can pick the winners in the playoffs!

Oh, and fish are the single least exciting pets you can have. For the most part, you just put up with the chore of feeding them once in a while until you get bored of the entire thing and pray for the day the fish all die.

I'd say stick with the fish. There are a wide assortment, and if you get bored you can always get a little shark or something and watch it go all Chuck Norris on the other fish.

I'd say something aquarium-based. My wife has a tank for fish and a tank for newts. The newts don't really do much, but guests seem to enjoy trying to find them.

They don't eat much, don't stink, don't make noise, and don't need to be cleaned all that often.

One of my wife's newts is 13 or 14 years old.

If you go the fish route, you can get little shrimp to go in there to keep it interesting, plus an assortment of different fish. Maintenance isn't too bad unless you go with marine/salt water fish.

Fish could let you have your dog/cat.

You go with piranhas AND the big pet. Anybody that comes snooping around with regards to your big pet gets fed to the fish.
