If the pull cord is a little stiff again after you put on the muffler try to start it again anyhow. If you can get it started it will blow out any remaining oil.

As for my mower, my father-in-law didn't call it a muffler, but after look at some pictures and reading your post, that was what my father-in-law did to my mower to get it to work (along with cleaning the spark plug). He tooked off the muffler and drained fluid from it.
