I got my car because its cute and it was more fun to drive than the others I test drove. Not becuase I thought driving a BMW entitled me to anything but going from point A to point B.

My BMW is the best car I've ever owned. I've had no problems with it at all, and I've never driven such a spunky car before. The interior is beautiful and everything is so easily accessible while driving. Its a great car. Oh yeah, and all my maintenance is free at the dealership.
Not all BMW drivers are ######s. But all BMW drivers are driving a status symbol whether you want to admit it or not. I'm not passing judgement on that, but it is a fact.

Both good cars, just different.
Nice cars...I was hoping to find a low milage 2005 325it (wagon) 2wd with a 5-speed, but they are pretty rare.

As for the $150 oil change.. that is pretty much par for the course these days with synthetic oil.. 7-9 litres at $9-10L $20 filter and a bit of labour and you are there. The other side of it is that on most European cars you only have to change the oil every 15-20,000km not 5-8000 like on most Jap and NA cars.. Really it all evens out in the end.
So what is it about the German cars that allows them to be so frugal with the oil?

Synthetics are made to last quite a bit longer, and since they require synthetic they can throw the interval up. Part of it is using filters which are way more expensive, so probably have a longer life.

I think you're crazy to wait that long though. I go on half intervals at the least and the oil coming out is quite dirty. Plus depending on the car they consume a bit, so you'll be topping it up anyway, might as well just change it.

Who cares if BMW/Audi/whatever drivers have a bad label? You'll always run into people who can't help but notice what you drive and get their hate on. In the end, they're the ones wasting their time sweating it.

SUV drivers, jacked up truck drivers, Japanese "sports" car drivers, Subie drivers, etc... everyone gets tagged. Drive what you like and embrace everything that goes with it.

Is it just me or does anyone also notice there seems to be a HUGE spike of BMW's in Calgary over the past few years? Like every 10th car I see is a BMW.

Yeah I've totally noticed that too. It's pretty crazy. I really like the 335s though so I like seeing them. Kick ass cars man.

Just curious, what's the criteria for a car to graduate to status symbol. Because I see BMW's singled out a lot, but never the same judgment on Volvo's, Lexus, Infiniti, etc. Is it money? Is it that the BMW is so beautiful? What is it exactly?

It has always been this way. Beemers were much more exclusive years ago when more people were NOT buying them. That is why they are singled out. I wouldn't single them out anymore, because more people have more money so they buy the more expensive cars. And modern BMW's are anything buy beautiful.

Volvo's are sensible cars.
Infiniti isn't that great of brand (not bad, just not posh status).
Lexus aren't as good as BMW's for driving, so they have nothing in their favor.

Just the way it is.

Just like most Merc drivers are said to have a lot of money because it is a Merc, even though a modern Volvo or Saab are just as expensive.

I suppose I just don't get it. To me, it was just my favorite car of those I test drove. I know the stigma is out there, I've just yet to hear a reasonable explanation as to why BMW drivers are singled out as jerks or snobs or, my personal favorite "new money." Its just a car.

I parked next to a new X5 yesterday, and I have to say, they rounded out the body style a little bit and that SUV is BEAUTIFUL. I would love to haul hockey gear around in that!

No, very true.

You follow up your initial 'brag' with another one essentially putting down those who drive good but less expensive vehicles, and you imply that it is because they can't afford to be like you with one in the garage and one on order. We don't need to know that for you to make your point.

Go away.

I also drive a M3, and my only reservation about it are people like you who make me look bad because of it.

Where I work, some of the most respected and best in the business drive very 'ordinary' cars, and it has nothing to do with what they have available to spend.

Edit: and you register on a hockey forum just to talk about your car... you're like school on Sunday... no class.

It's the leasing options they give people. Plus they have some cheap 1 and 3 series for average joe.

BMW are nice cars I know but they don't impress me style wise unless you get up there in price.

Point taken and quite eloquently stated.

I am beginning to see the point re: BMW owners....I dont think you need people like me to look bad, you're probably doing a good job of that all by yourself.

The german manufacturers are using whats called 'Condition Based Service'. The ECU monitors conditions such as litres of fuel consumed, coolant temps, KM's, driving habits etc etc. It predicts the next service based on the parameters it views.
It is quite a shift of thinking to put your trust in this as we are all conditioned to change the oil at regular 5K km intervals. Also, there is a fair amount of distrust as the CBS was implemented right around the same time that the service packages were included free of charge
I believe GM has also moved into CBS, but I dont think the intervals are as long...
