My situation is confusing, we took posession of our unit in January of last year. However it is a brand new building and the city hadn't assesed all the individual units, so taxes were paid lump sum for most of the year by the entire building via the lawyers. I don't really have a baseline to compare to this years taxes as a result.
Edit: The post above mine probably describes our situation better than I could!

Yeah, that happens a lot with condos. The city doesn't assess individually until the legal units are created which often happens after possession. In that case the same thing I said above is true, but it's prorated based on your unit factor so that the adjustment is for x days at y/10000 X Property Taxes for the whole building. y/10000 is your share of the taxes for the whole building.

My inlaws in New Jersey pay ~$12,000 for a house worth about $700k. I guess it is not so bad.

Nope, about half of that.
I'll let you figure the rest out

Another funny thing, I pay my taxes through my mortgage company, but they can't add the parking stall tax bill to it. I have to manually pay it each year.

OK, wait! You have to pay property tax on a parking space? I've never heard of such a thing.

Each "property" is probably titled to you seperately... or at least that's why I'd assume that's why they are all seperate tax bills.

That is correct, and it is how I am set up.
I pay $97 a month for my condo, and $5 a month for my parking stall.

Titled parking. Paying taxes on it is not nearly as absurd as having to fill out a declaration of whether I support the public or separate school system separately for it though. I was tempted to support the public system with my condo, and the separate with my parking stall.

Man I don't miss property taxes... since moving outta calgary in december, my "property tax" is 9.00 a month... 5.00 for garbage collection and 4.00 for the fire department... The garbage collection is optional...
Of course I miss all the sweet services we used to get from our city property taxes... Like cool bridges, 2 hour commutes, light polution, 16ft of sidewalk, zoning restrictions, bi-laws and council elections....

I'm down with cool bridges, only have a 10 minute commute, blocks upon blocks of sidewalks and they even made huge strides with reducing our light pollution! ( http://www.calgary.ca/portal/server....t+Retrofit.htm )
