All the masses are basically a plan B for the deceased in case they missed the cut and finished up in purgatory. Masses and prayers from the living get you out and up into heaven. Something like that.

Bit like a Monopoly get out of jail card.

No but your post was rather obvious. I am well aware that the collection plate is optional and that Scientology is way more coercive when it comes to that kind of stuff.

I didn't get that from your post. I thought you were arguing against my stance that Scientology is unique in requiring payment to achieve whatever the goal is.

Well, which is it? Is the collection plate analogous to a Scientology fee or not? You seem to be saying two opposite things and then coming across all sarcastic when someone points out what you originally said isn't at all true.

You want a mass said for someone you ask the priest. He says the mass. It is common practice that you then give money to the priest for doing so, but there is no way that you are obligated. That is 100% against the teachings of the church for a priest to withold prayers on account of payment.

Absolute bull.

No way? BS straight back at ya. I've been to gift shops in monasteries where the price of a mass is advertised/marketed. You get the mass card, you want the person's name and the stamp on the card, then you cough up the coin at the cashier's desk where it is stamped to say that a mass is being said.

But let's say even if you were right and their is never any obligation.

According to their own teachings if you want the person out of purgatory you better pay for it.

211. How can we help the souls being purified in purgatory?
1032
Because of the communion of saints, the faithful who are still pilgrims on earth are able to help the souls in purgatory by offering prayers in suffrage for them, especially the Eucharistic sacrifice. They also help them by almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance.

A most excellent explanation of Scientology...

They are a complete scam designed to rip off the vulnerable. The sooner these quacks are held accountable for the pain they have caused, the better.
