Bigger lots is a big thing for most people. I live in Cranston and really hate it now. Gone downhill in the last few years.

Nope. We moved to Okotoks because of what it had to offer as a Town.
Mongo,
- The local schools are great for kids that age
- Tons of sports/other activities to do for our kids
- Can't speak about the Doctors
- Sometimes it is a small amount warmer, but I wouldn't agree with the previous statement of "lots more wind" here
- No idea about Edison
- We are up in that NE area of town and love it - you don't worry about the commute congestion ever and it's very quiet up here
- Yes
Other than work, we rarely travel in to Calgary - everything we need is right in town.

Okotoks is a bedroom community to Calgary with great small town ambiance and most of the services available. I would stay away from Sheep River Heights though, as the area is prone to flooding. We almost bought a lot there 20 years ago backing on the river for $64,000, yep, this was considered expensive in those days, but now I am happy we didn't.
If you can afford it, look for a lot in Air Ranch, really nice community. If that's too much, look in Crystal Ridge.

Cranston kind of has the worst of everything right now though. It's far from downtown (commute for me), lots aren't huge (on average), lots of people and traffic, and no useful public transit whatsoever.
I think I'd choose Silverado over Cranston at this point which I never would have thought when it was first going up.

I'd forgotten about this thread.
Well here we are.. 4-1/2 years since I bought a house in Okotoks..
I love it here. I see wildlife all the time.. deer, coyotes, foxes, hawks, etc. Its quiet. No big city continual traffic noise, except for the occasional train that rolls through town and of course blows its whistle half a dozen times in the middle of the night.
I'm a 10 minute walk to the Sheep River. I go there often with my dogs. They love it.
Rarely do I go to Calgary to shop. We have almost everything here... except perhaps a Future Shop or Best Buy. Would be nice if one of those set up shop here.
Over all it was a pretty good decision to move her... except...
For the amount of gas that my wife and I use on a monthly basis for our commute to work five days a week.. We both work in the south part of Calgary but its still costs us approximately $600 per month for two vehicles... yep thats right folks.... $600!!! Thats about $7000 per year!!!
Needless to say we will probably be moving back to Calgary sometime during the next year or so (want to do some reno upgrades on the house before we sell).

You are mistaken. Sheep River Heights is about 100 ft above the river. I would say the only part of Okotoks that is prone to flooding is the downtown area and the RV park next to the river. The rest of the town was basically untouched by last years flood.

That could be possible. I know my house, when it was built in 2004 sold for $285,000 or thereabouts. In 2009 I bought it for $440,000 and I would guess its now worth about $520,000.

How much is an equivalent house in Calgary? $7000 a year for gas doesn't seem that outrageous for two vehicles. Or do you mean $7k/vehicle? We only have one vehicle and live quite centrally, and I'm probably still paying $200-300/month for gas.

$3500 per year for each vehicles. We average about 120 kms/day traveling back and forth to work (60 kms per vehicle). When we lived in SW Calgary, it was about 40-50 kms per day for two vehicles.
And remember, we are just talking about gas... as the vehicles are now being used twice as much, maintenance costs have doubled, tires last half as long, etc. etc.

Good question. Not sure right now. I guess it depends on the kind of house and its location in Calgary, that we can get if we move. Would prefer someplace within walking distance to Fish Creek and fairly equidistant to both my wife's and my work places.

Could just be the fact that my parents back onto a large open space, but even when I check the weather it usually says it's a lot windier in Okotoks. Lots of Wind Warnings as well in the last few weeks there.
