Funny topic. I own - or I'm owned by - a nine-year-old doberman cross, a former stray. Owned him since he was six weeks old. He is perhaps the most gentle dog I have ever owned, and I've had dogs almost my entire life.

I have three sons - six, four and two - and I have never worried about "Elvis" hurting them. Quite the contrary............my dog considers himself to be the guardian angel of my kids and has on a couple of occasions saved their bacon.

Although he is fairly fierce looking, he is a p*ssycat. My wife and I chuckle when deliverymen will not come to the door.

Do you know anything about pit bulls - their history and what they were bred for? You should look it up.

They crossed bull dogs (powerful fighting dogs used for bull baiting) with terriers (high spirited dogs that do no give up easily once they are set off) to create a breed that would kill anything no matter how much someone tried to stop it. They were bred for the purpose of killing.

Are you're comparing that to a Jack Russell Terrier?

Thanks for the info re pitbulls, I'll try and remember it. The only 'comparison' there is to be made here is that most breeds of dogs could be classified as dangerous if you go back far enough. Why do you think the main dog for police forces and security places are shepherds? Because they are extremely intelligent and vicious. Jack Russel Terriers, they are hands down one of the most vicious breeds out there.....uh oh, theres that comparison again...damn, when will I learn. Pit Bulls can be vicious and they have the size/strength to back it up, I guess thats where the comparison ends. Lets look at it another way, a small snubnose 38 will have the same consequences as a magnum 45....that is also a comparison, right or wrong, its the truth. By taking a broad brush and saying Ban Pit Bulls is inherently wrong, as was pointed out earlier, there are several types of dogs that would be lumped into being called a 'pitbull'......this is animal genocide at its best (worst).

I don't think the issue here is that there is anything specifically about a Pit Bull's attitude or demeanor that makes it 'ban-able'. Its the fact that dogs turn. Jack Russels and Pit Bulls. As a society, we've gotten used to the fact that dogs will bite people, that's the risk we take by keeping them around.

The issue is that when the Jack Russel turns, he takes a chunk out of your ankle. The pitbull tears your throat out.

Its like guns. Not all guns are banned, and some have good uses. Automatic weapons and bazookas, while also 'guns', are too dangerous to have around. Thus, they're banned.

A pit bull is slain in dramatic and public fashion in Edmonton overnight.

Theres two problems with these type of stories.

1) When I was attacked and recieved fairly good injuries ( scars on my arms and legs) from a german shepard and it was reported there was no news story or anything public. But when a Pitbull does it (with more or less damage) There's a news story because they're prerceived dangerous

2) There is no explaining what made the dog attack. The dog could of just snapped which is what everyone will assume and is also what the writer wants you to assume, but how do we know the owner wasn't out giving the dog it's daily beating to make it tougher and than the dog finally fought back?

I have also been attacked twice by German Shepards, and I am not naive around dogs, having owned 6 dogs during my life and often considered my dog my best friend. Shepards are not bred to fight to the death as pitbulls are, but I agree they are not among my favorite breeds. I had one neighbour in Calgary with two rotties who used to break down their fence and come into my yard and threaten me until I backed up into my house. As a good neighbour I told them of my problem and they thought it was funny and laughed at me. Another time I knocked at a strangers door for a business appointment and their pitbull, upon opening the door, immediately pounced out and began agressavly[sp] sniffing my crotch. Needless to say I remained perfectly still for the 3 or4 minutes this lasted and the owner did nothing. When I protested, he also laughed at me. The people who own these dogs are often as twisted as their dogs are.

I saw a television clip at a dog show the other day and the people their said if pitbulls are banned they will just import bigger aggresive dogs. Another neighbour owned an Akita [Japanese fighting dog] which I took for a walk a couple of times. Rather he took me for a walk, being about 120lb.s of solid muscle and a strong willed mind. This dog never caused any trouble but I felt I was dealing with a loaded gun. I currently live in a semi rural area where 90% of the dogs are free to roam except Sing Sing, the rotty doberman X. The owner told me he attacked a small dog and so he is strongly fenced in and only allowed out on a leash. I actually like this dog and pet him through the fence, but I wouldn't trust him with my 17# Llaso Apso. I'm with Cowperson, ban pitbulls and all other fighting dogs.

I own a big blonde golden.Beautiful dog ,everybody in five or so neighbourhoods recognize him and encourage their kids to "come and see Dizzy".
He has never been anything but too big or wags his bum and tail too much and has knocked little ones over.So I taught Diz too "be careful" and he gives a wider swath. And he gets my slippers, matter of fact he fetches.
He is a retriever,he retrieves, herders herd. And when you teach them that or allow them to work at that they are the happiest dogs on the earth. Lapdogs lap.
Killers kill. People buy these dogs for a reason and it is not usually to undo the genes within.
I agree ban fighting dogs. But that is so tough a call.
Heck my guy Diz bit me,then quit ,of course, when I played his tennis balls on him.
Maybe that is the difference,he quit. But Golden's rank right up there with most bites. more dogs ,low %,but as breeding goes..scary/

As an aside ,old stats 00 , I think
67 % of people are bitten by a dog on a leash
20% at friends house
9 % at a fenced in dog
and 4% in an off leash area

Pretty nebulous stats but done throughout Vancouver for two years.
Calgaries are much better. Don't let those Oilers know this but Calgary has more off-leash areas than any city in the world.

PS If there is any artists out there that can draw happy dogs, mail me.
