All he does is wave his arms while he gets pummelled. I've had about 40 fights on this level and have broken free only once. Hell even when I'm the guy in half mount the guy just reaches up and grabs me, then he submits me with the leg on the throat move. Think I'll give this game a pass, even though it looks and plays awesome, but that bs once your pinned ruins it for me. even in the tutorials half the time it doesn't do what it's supposed to do to break out of a pin.

You're doing it wrong... it's all about timing and when to rotate the right stick and what reverse you're using.

well I really can't figure it out. if the guy is on top of me and half of me isn't pinned I should just be able to start squirming, or push back or something no matter when I try, shouldn't have to wait for a certain moment, especially when it doesn't seem to matter when I try it, nothing works. if half of my body is free you'd think I'd be able to do something, not just lay there waiting to be hit in the face. I dunno, maybe I'll figure it out, but right now it just isn't a fun game knowing as soon as I'm down it's over. And I really don't want to drop the difficulty level because the fights never lasted more than 2 minutes after I figured out my offense.
so how do I know when to try a move? do I wait until the other guy starts to move? I've tried that too, but his move is over before I get a chance to do anything, so I'm really just frustrated with it.
If I could figure it out this would be one of the coolest games I've ever played, and would definitely have to buy it.

For me, I haven't cared too much about timing reverses, and just worried about trying to make progress, be it on the ground or on top.
As soon as I go to ground, I do two things:
a) Press triangle to throw punches
b) Rotate the R stick like so:

Repeatedly.
As in, I don't stop.
Depending on which fighter you pick, and how hurt the other guy is, it'll be more or less effective.
Granted, Rua is a lot better on the ground, and if you play as Liddell (which it seems like you do), it's a tougher go once you get taken down.
That said, I play mostly as Rua, and am at the point now where I beat Chuck about 85% of the time on expert. So cool to see huge bruises start to develop after about 25 kicks to the midsection on the same side.
If the game is like the demo, I'm really excited, as it's really, REALLY realistic...and the times I get knocked out, I know it's because of a mistake on my part.
Big fan so far, hope the multiplayer is fun when the game comes out.
Hope the ground stuff helps.

It is real fun to play, but the game play could run a little smoother.
I really hope their are different difficulty levels as well.

yea, I guess basically since I upped the difficulty I was just hitting the x button to set up the fights, so I've been liddell all the time. I'll have to switch up and see if it changes things. Plus I'm usually bagged by the time I get put down, so I'm sure that might be part of why I have no success either.

I'll be hitting up the blockbuster video near my work to pick it up along with Bionic Commando at the same time.

Looks like a cool game and I tried the demo, but I'm a button masher and I'd get killed playing this game. Way too much for me to remember. I can barely handle NHL 09

I played the demo a lot more and learned some of the nuances to the game. Beat Rua on expert so I think I'm reading to go and pick this one up.

I rented this, so far I like but I have one gripe. I cannot submit someone to save my life. Either by button mashing or circling the right stick, I just start it and then fail. Other than that, awesome game.

Yeah, it's really tough to submit anyone unless they are tired or rocked (turn the stamina bar on in the options menu if you have not done so already). I've still manage to get a couple of 1st round submissions but it seems you really have to go out of your way to get them. It's easier to just knock a guy out. It is much easier to submit a human opponent, however.
Great game though, they really captured the essence of MMA in this 1st edition of the next generation UFC games. The game needs some tweeking and they missed a few little things (no southpaw fighting stance, can't play as real fighters in career mode, only created ones). Lots to look forward to for UFC 2010 but i'll gladly take this game over any other fighting game.

Excellent game. However, steep learning curve to master all the really good ground clinching, submissions, reversals, etc.
I also like the idea of being able to download fighters, which I'm sure THQ and UFC will allow in the future.
