There are some horrible overreactions in this thread. Some people are being wayyyy to sensitive. Do you think Americans cry about how they are portrayed on Air Farce? It is comedy for gawds sake(poorly done I agree).

For me its just the tastelessness. Do we make fun of Americans? Hell yes. Do we make fun of the people who are ACTUALLY putting their lives on the line for the protection of their citizens? Hell NO. Completely offside IMO.

I agree that there are some overreactions, but man, that was....I dont know what that was.

What it wasnt was funny. That it certainly was in no danger of being.

Just brutal.

Where does Fox find such an abundance of losers? It's like they've got a 50-foot sign out front of the studio that reads "Will pay loud-mouthed morons for ignorant opinions. No experience, sense of comic delivery, or intelligence necessary."

I mean, I understand that was supposed to be a lampooning, but the trick to a good lampooning is to lampoon with love, not snide bitterness and condescension.

Man, I could go for a good lampoon right about now.

The guy basically made the same joke introduction like 5 times. It was just "if you were blah blah blah, I'd do you" with different situations each time.

Was this a comedy???

The most depressing part of that "sketch" is that i hardly see a difference between that and what CNN broadcasts.

Like in elementary school, ignoring the bully is the best solution.
The unfortunate thing is, more then a few Americans (that I've gotten to know down here) do in fact this take kind of stuff as fact. Kind of sad really, but when media and the masses start to propagate jokes like this, jokes start to become truths.

One of the guys here who's supposed to be among the "educated" here was surprised "Canadia" (Can-eh-dia) has a army. The fact is, Canadians have the best fighter jet pilots and snipers in the world and get the top missions for them.

Hmm, I actually thought the joke about the Canadian army was somewhat amusing, but not to the point of bothering to watch it all the way through. The other stuff, what the...?

In any case, same old, same old.

Making fun of "the others" is among the most common and basic forms of humour. It's always offensive, it's kind of the point.

In the wake of the latest deaths of our troops in Afghanistan the clip is starting to make headlines.
Quote:

Liberal MP and defence critic Denis Coderre urged Canadians to write to Fox News to protest the panel and said Canada should raise the issue with U.S. President Barack Obama. "What's a disgrace is that a lot of people are watching this and it is promoting stereotypes," he said.

I'd bet each and everyone of the losers in the segment would be instantly begging to get into Canada if they were drafted and expected to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I think I'm more upset about the Liberal defence critic Denis Coderre trying to make hay of this. He like some on this thread hate Fox and are trying to pretend that this comedy program is reflective of the whole news network.

1. This is a low-brow comedy show

2. It airs in the early morning for a reason

3. It's panel and guests are generally low cost comedians. I've even seen a porn star be invited on as a guest.

4. The show doesn't have the benefit of writers or reversal. It's all ad-lib.

5. For American comedy to be funny it needs either Canadian born comedians or at the very least Canadian born writers to feed them their lines. The Red Eye has niether.

I thought they did a good job of displaying the ignorance that does exist in the USA regarding Canada.

OK, so here's a copy of email I just sent to Fox (It felt good writing it!). And also, how it backfired.

Quote:
As a Canadian, I have to tell you I am utterly disgusted by the March 17th episode of Red Eye. Canadian troops are dying in Afghanistan alongside Americans, and you choose to diss the Canadian military with very poorly done satire? "I didn't even know they were in the war" is an outrageous statement that goes far beyond being funny. The satire was downright offensive.

Considering that Canada is the United States' greatest ally, both politically and economically, Fox better smarten up before airing such garbage.

(My name)
Calgary, Alberta, Canada (The big country to the north, and your number one trading partner, idiots!)
How did I screw it up? Well, I forgot that last comma! "Your number one trading partner, idiots" became "Your number one trading partner idiots"! Oops! I guess I should proofread more carefully!

Everyone needs to take a deep breath and calm down.

This is not an international incident. Its not even a big deal. Doesn't Peter Mackay have anything better to do? I know Coderre doesn't, but still...

Its called free speech. It unfortunately allows idiots to say whatever they want. Funny, we can hurl insults south on a daily basis, on GOVERNMENT SPONSORED TV programs, and no one says a word. Yet, one crackpot says something disparaging about Canada on a privately funded TV, and people start losing their minds. Grow up.

^^^the problem is that the satire was of a particularly degrading and ignorant variety. More so than most satire. Also, it was aired just after Canadian troops had died in Afghanistan.

Here's Rick Mercer's well-stated response:

Rick Mercer telling someone not to be an ass is laughable.

He made a whole show out of misleading comments, taking advantage of pre-occupied politicians, and massive editing.

Red Eye is pretty dumb, but its privately funded. Mercer gets paid by the Canadian taxpayer to make fun of Americans, making as many of them as possible look like total morons.

Between Korea and now, Canada has notoriously been a mooch to the US. (You can maybe argue Suez). We've been offered free equipment/weapons/ships to do our jobs but refused them, yet openly mock them. We're also the destination of choice for their draft-dodgers. They often have to help us out. Yes, now we're doing our part again, but I don't think Canada's military contribution is sancrosanct. We have the reputation of being military milquetoasts, just as the French have theirs as surrender monkeys. Americans are imperialist warlords... etc.

We have a field day with them, often crassly, and its "funny." They make some (poor) jokes, and we freak out.
