Meh. Tethering was probably scraped because AT&T complained.

Looks like no tethering though... unless there's something hidden in all that peer-to-peer talk.

Always been $10 for major version upgrades.

Someone on MacRumours said it best: iPod Touch costs $300, iPhone costs $2000... so free upgrades for iPhone, $10 for iPod.

Q: Where do you stand on tethering?
A: There’s two pieces needed to support that: Client side and working with carriers. We’re absolutely supporting tethering in the client side in iphone 3.0, but we’re working with carriers around the world to see when they can add tethering support on their networks. But we are building that support into iphone 3.0.
YES.

Edit: More text to allow for caps. ><

In summary:

In-app purchase - This is one of those things that probably won't click with me until I start to use it. My guess many devs will use it really well and many will use it just horribly. Not too concerned though as the ones that don't use it properly will get hammered in the reviews

peer to peer - I'm sure this will come in handy, but again this seems to be something that I may have to experience to appreciate. Aren't there apps that connect devices on the same network already?

accessories - Very cool. I am really looking forward to accessories being sold that have a dedicated app. This to me opens up a whole new world of options for people that want to get into the mix.

Maps - I'm a huge maps user so the addition of turn-by-turn gets me excited. There was no mention of voice activity was there? I'd like the idea of not having to look at my phone as much as I currently do.

push notifications - Sure it isn't multiple apps running at the same time, but if what he said was true (80% decrease in battery life) then I'm on board with push. I haven't had the problems with push and apple that others have had, so I'm interested to see how this works. I have many apps (ie tweetie, google talk) that would probably become 10x more useful with push notification instead of having to open them up to refresh.

cut/copy/paste
- Finally. Overdue but welcomed. I often have to use my phone to edit websites as I'm on the ctrain for a long period of each day. I can't tell you how many times I've almost lost my head trying to type out long lines of html. This will be a life saver.

landscape - Truthfully not a big landscape user. my hand size works really well with the portait view. I'm sure it'll come in handy the odd time, but nothing I've been wishing for.

messages: Very cool. I've been emailing photos a lot lately and this will help greatly.

Voice Memos: I had an app to do this (well ... kind of do this) and I found it was never used. Perhaps this will be different.

Calendar with support for CalDAV: I'm more excited for the subscription calendars later in the year, but I suppose this will be cool. Truthfully I'm not sure how it will be used in my house.

new Stock app - moving on ....

Search: Just this morning I was pissed that I had to start up my computer to search out an email.

Spotlight: One of the best things about macs in my opinion. Greatly looking forward to this. the google mobile app kinda sorta does this, but for whatever reason I just don't find it overly useful. Pumped to give this a spin.

I've got a prime example of this.

I work for a mapping company. We're developing an application that uses our 3D imagery and trail information to be used that does not do web based loading of our tiles. We store everything on the phone. Apple's restrictions regarding subscriptions tied our hands a bit. Instead of being able to let the user download a certain region of data of interest, they could only buy separate apps that had data for all of Colorado, or Utah or whatever.

Now with subscriptions, we can provide a geographically limited region of interest (tile on demand, say data at a 25km radius of your current position) instead of buying an entire state.

I'm pretty stoked about landscape SMS. Hopefully it will cut down on my pressing the letter beside the one I want occasionally.

Good list of features.

Flash will probably never come to the iPhone.

That is very interesting ... so you wouldn't need a cellular connection to have a map of your location.

Once you've downloaded the map, no.

I'm confused about the tethering. In the Q&A session they said they're building tethering support in and are working with carriers around the world.

Gizmodo says in their event rundown that it's a feature of 3.0: "This feature will allow you to connect your iPhone 3G to a laptop, to use it as a modem to access the internet. Carriers still have to sign-off on it, and probably charge more for it. None have announced it yet."

Didn't appear to be part of the presentation though...

I think that was an insinuation based on the comments in the Q&A.

Endgadget's summary is here:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/17/a...iphone-os-3-0/

They seem to be confirming that tethering support is built-in but that it will be in control of the carriers.

Wonder how badly Rogers/Fido will try to screw us on that...

If you're jailbroken then you're the one screwing them!

How are you screwing them? You purchased the phone, you own the hardware, you have just decided not to live within Apple's realm.
