I'm not a fan of that shape of a diamond, I like square or round ones. But I 'm not wearing it so who cares. Would one that shape get hung up on things easier?

Sounds like a great site, maybe it's just me though but it seems weird to be buying something so important and costly over the internet without even seeing it.

Anything over 25k is getting simply ridiculous. Even then, it really depends on age and socioeconomic status.
If I was with a girl that expected that kind of excessive ring, I would expect not only a Rolex/Omega... it would be Steak and BJ day, everyday, indefinitely.

Sorry to bump, just want to get CP's opinion (especially the ladies)
How important is clarity?
My minimum standards right now is a VS2, where the inclusions are invisible to the naked eye, very difficult under 10x magnification. Is that good enough (and not going to VS1 and above)?
I figured as long as colour is "colourless" a minimum of F should be okay
For the "Shine/sparkly factor", I'm leaning that it has to be very good and higher
Anyways, some advice on diamond specs would be appreciated

That makes me sick. Those girls sound like the biggest dummies. This thread stresses me out, I'm a semester away from graduating college and I've been dating my girlfriend for 3.5 years, the writing's on the wall. Trying to balance paying off student loans, looking for a place, on top of having to save up thousands of dollars for a ring is terrifying. Such a stupid custom. I think the guys should be allowed to get final say on the honeymoon if we're expected to spend that much on a ring while getting nothing in return.

SEriously - if your g/f doesn't understand that you want to get a better financial foothold before splashing out a couple G on a ring - you've just wasted 3.5 years.

I also vouch for Alberta Diamond Exchange. Top notch service and pricing. You pay a little more than you would through blue nile but get to see the product and have the help of the owner. He wasn't happy with one diamond he brought in so he ordered ina new one to match perfectly.

Haha if it makes you feel better, this is my second go-around with college, I'm almost getting into my late 20's. The first time around was at MRC in my late teens/early 20's, and I was single throughout. I put my time to good use haha.
And to the poster that asked(I can't multiquote), ya she's understanding. But she also comes from an upper middle class/upper class family(my fam's the epitome of middle class), so I know there's expectations from them. Not to mention her older sister got engaged over Christmas and the dude bought her the BIGGEST rock, haha I seriously wanted to murder him when I saw it. Upstaging biznitch.
I'll worry about that shyte when the situation presents itself though, right now I'm dealing with studying for finals. One crisis at a time...

Don't sweat it so much.
For the vast majority of young couples, saving money for a downpayment on a home is a much, much, MUCH smarter decision than blowing several thousand dollars on a shiny trinket. Any woman who disagrees with this is probably not worth marrying anyway.

I think they are supposed to be mined in a 'environmentally friendly' way too. Whatever that means. Probably still harmful, but maybe not as much.

Agreed. My wife's engagement ring has a Polar Bear diamond, from the Ekati mine in the NWT. Ten years ago when we got married, Ekati had only been producing for a year and a half and the premium on Canadian diamonds was ridiculous. I paid roughly 1 1/2 times what a comparable African diamond would have cost, but the peace of mind was worth it IMO. The Canadian stones have really come down since. They're still a little more expensive, but nowhere near what they were.

I bought from Blue Nile and it was a great experience. Finace loves her ring and always gets compliments on it. Just went with a simple solitare diamond. Their customer service was excellent I had the ring shipped to my house only to realize she was off work the week it was to arrive. Called them up real quick they had no problem changing the address at all. I would easily buy from them again!
