I bought a machine at Staples for $30. paid for itself in 3 rolls of dimes. It went amazingly fast. You can buy bags by the denomination at staples or the dollar stores. Not nearly as bad a job as I thought but do get the sleeves not the rolling papers.

Kids liked helping too.

I just go to the bank and ask for rolls and they give em to me for free. (Scotiabank)

I've currently a ziploc bag that's completely full of change, and a cup that's completely full of change....and a stack of rolls that need to have coins in them. One of these days when I don't have any school work to do....

All the change is from the summer too....the joys of getting tips....pounds of change.

I don't really mind rolling it though....I'll put on a ski movie in the background some day, and I'll feel like I gained money when I get around to counting it.

gotta say, this thread amazes me for 2 reasons... 1)i can go into my bank at any time with a jar of change and they will count it and convert it to paper money for free and 2) how the heck do you guys use so much actual money? i use paper/coin a couple times a week. i swipe my debit card for almost everything.

crazy canadians!

I use my debit card maybe 6 times a month, I take out enough to last the week and live on that. Its helped me with my budgeting and reduced my bank fees.

I hate the idea of convienient cash, I tend to have a spending habit when its readily available.

The machines some people are referring to are the Coinstar machines. You just dump the change in, it takes a 10% cut, and then gives you a scannable credit on paper for the store in question.

http://locator.coinstar.com/Locator.aspx?page=CE

It doesn't look like there's one in Calgary.

all you people who throw away pennies should save them and give them to Unicef or some other such org.

Let me know when you've got $750 more. I can even come out to Victoria and do it for an extra 10%.

Well, regarding your first point; this was the point of the thread. In the States you can take coins to any bank or grocery store and dump them into a machine. I think the OP was looking for somewhere that has such a machine here.

I know the reason I have so many coins; it's not that I have so many cash transactions but so few. If I was using cash all the time I would use up my coins. But because it's only when I go and grab my $1.50 coffee in the morning that I get coins back. I give a $5 bill and get $3.50 in coins back. (Remember, no $1 bills here.)

I have $51 in rolled pennies, nickels and dimes that have been sitting on my counter for the past 4 months. I look at them everyday and mean to take them to the bank but I keep putting it off because for some reason I imagine the teller rolling her eyes at me and making a big fuss out of having to convert my lowly coins.

Not to nitpick but I'm pretty sure rolls of dimes equal $5

Maybe he is factoring time as well? Seems to me his time is a lot more valuable than yours is.
