The difference between 1080p and 720p is not as great as the differences between 2 720p signals, one compressed and one uncompressed. Mpeg 4 will be the true launch of 'HDTV', frankly we're more in EDTV territory right now.

For real. $1400 52" 1080p 30,000:1 dynamic contrast, 2,000:1 true contrast, 5 ms refresh rate...

I played TF2 (PC) on it earlier today, and man it eats up video games.

Easily the best non 120 hz TV i've seen to have little to no ghosting.
That's a great price. The sale price for Best Buy in the US is 2200.00. For 1400 bucks I was sold on this TV. Too bad Bestbuy.ca won't deliver to California.

If I was looking for a new TV, I'd wait for the new Panasonic Plasmas coming out this spring and summer. For watching hockey and other sports, plasma is the way to go. They also have the deepest blacks which videophiles say give the best picture. There will be panels for every price range.

I'm looking to buy a smaller hdtv (around 32") for our living room on the main floor. My main 1080p unit is in the basement and used for standard tv viewing, gaming, bluray etc. Kind of sucks though when you are cooking dinner and there is a game on that you can't watch, so we're going to try and find the cheapest 32" we can without venturing into the somewhat uncharted waters of a company we've never heard of.

Because we are only looking for a 32" and only looking to spend in the $500-$600 range 1080p just seems unnecessary. I'd be totally fine with a 720p set at that size.

I had heard that basically all tvs are made by one or two companies. Is this true or Urban legend? If true then the strange asian name tv from crappy tire should be okay?

My understanding is that the panels themselves (the glass part) are only made by 2 or 3 companies. Everything else, however, is different...hence the difference in price.

This is actually a fairly common practice in the electronics industry.

Ok folks, tax return just came in and I need advice! As mentioned above we're looking for an hdtv 32" in size and less than $600. This is the current future shop offer:

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...langid=EN#tabs

It's a 32" LG for $549. I know LG doesn't get the greatest reviews, but I've seen two in the wild and they've actually come with high recommendations from both parties involved. Can anybody beat $600 with a better tv?

Thanks for the help.

I've got a 32" LG. It's a bit more expensive model with 120hz and I'm very happy with it. Good colour, good panel. I've had it about a year and no problems.

Into the RRSP, shes goes.

Yes, I'm aware that's not the kind of advice you wanted. It'd be the smart thing to do, however.

Don't worry, what is not going towards the tv is going into the "not fun at all" fund (RRSP).

Don't even think about it just go buy the sony KDL-46Z4100.

Best electronics decision I have ever made... it so beautiful. I miss it right now... stupid work.

oh take a flashlight to the store, shine it on the LCD surface of TV your buying - nothing shows off scuffs and abuse like a flashlight. They will think your strange until they see how bad they treat their TV's even if never opened...

*Not intended for the 32" under $600 guy*

It's not that I didn't believe you, I just assumed this would be a sale that had long since past. I went into futureshop this evening and while I had the intention buying the LG, I decided to pick the brain of the guy there. I asked what he thought and his reply was "you'd be crazy not to get this samsung for $549".

It's last years model, unchanged from the new model (except it has one more hdmi input for some reason) and was about $120 cheaper! He said they were just trying to sell off the old units.

I can't believe how good the standard def picture is. I realize a big part of that is because it's only 32", but I'm still shocked. Enough that I'm actually debating even hooking up hd for it.

I noticed a similar thing happening on my brother in law's 37" tv hooked up to hd. The viewing distance is pretty large and the high def just didn't seem to "pop" like it does on other sets. So looking at the standard def on this current tv I'm wondering if the difference will be enough for a $20 per month hd box rental.

Apologies in advance for spelling errors. I'm on my phone and very tired so there will be no editing!

Do you know when they're coming out?

I've heard good things about Panasonics.

They're starting to trickle out although I don't know if any stores have them in stock yet. So far just some cheaper models are listed on Panasonic's Canadian site but the Americans have the G10 already for sale. The top row here are new models.
The S1 is replacing the Z80 but with much better black levels. The G10 is replacing the Z85 but is THX certified. Per usual we'll get gouged in comparison to American prices.
