This woman made a brutal mistake and she should have been more careful but that's hardly a reason to say she deserves life less than anybody else here. I'm sure everybody has had one of those moments where they drive through a light only to realize afterwards that they weren't paying attention and it was red. Sure that is a more likely scenario, but still a ###### move that is commonly done.

Yes I am ignorant and I am not ashamed. Calgary Transit has plenty of "dummy proof" safety nets. If you find a way to get past them, Darwin may be at the pearly gates with a shiny trophy for you when you arrive.

The flashing lights, the bells, the arms....they are all reminders of not to cross. If you choose to cross I cannot help what is eventually bound to happen to those without the ability to process all of these safety nets that in place to protect us.

I feel bad for this womens family but why do you choose to run in front of a train when all of the lights and other safety props are telling you otherwise. The government cannot protect people from themselves. Stupidity and the inability to see a giant white train, along with the lights etc......nobody can protect those types from the inevitable.

Why I should be ashamed of myself I don't understand, but that's ok.

So you survived getting smoked by a train?

Can't you hear and feel it though? Also, those trains have massive headlights, so I would think they would have seen you and have started blowing the horn. Unless they were text messaging at the time.

I'm still baffled at how this can happen.

There are so many warnings to tell you a train is coming. If that doesn't help, perhaps looking in BOTH DIRECTIONS FOR ON COMMING trains will give you a clue.

How can incidents like these still occur? This just happened last year around the same area as well with some kid that went to my former high school.

Well being Chuck Norris I was able to stop the train with my bare hands. Had I been a mere mortal well I may not have been so lucky.

I turned around and basically just dove off the tracks. It was only 3 or 4 seconds behind me. There was no vibration coming off the tracks or anything.

I'd stick to birds etc. if you want ammo for Darwin. Humans have a amazing capacity to just Pete and Repeat.
You are attempting to apply Darwin to society - that mistake has been made before - see Chamberlain, Hitler. I was merely referring to an individual - as in an individual does something stupid and either learns or dies.

Tragic story and hopefully folks learn about wearing loud headphones at busy intersections. Not a bad idea to turn down the music when approaching an intersection etc while walking. To me it's just common sense that unfortunately this woman and others sometimes lack.

I am still amazed that people wear headphones while driving a car. If not illegal, it should be. I don't want to risk my life and pay higher insurance premiums because of these clowns.

How are headphones any different than a loud stereo system?

If you make one illegal then you better make them both illegal.

I don't know about Alberta, but I know someone who was ticketed for it in Manitoba.

Headphones often shut out any other sounds from entering the ear. Also, loud stereo systems above a certain decibel level are illegal in most cities. I'd actually like to see the police enforce that more.

People aren't paying attention. How many times have you been driving and someone just crosses the street without even looking at you to see if you've stopped? Seems every time I yield to turn right, someone is crossing the street without looking.

When I'm crossing the street I always look. Sometimes I even raise a hand to thank the driver for stopping for me. I can't just walk across, what if the car doesn't stop!

Sorted.

I actually just meant to imply putting bumper car fronts on trains would solve the problem, but then google search does that crazy thing that it does and voila!!

A picture of Darwin driving a bumper car = Awesome.

In case you are interested natural selection also weeds out individuals who are not kind to their group. Typically altruism is more beneficial to a species survival than selfish behaviour. Ya know, just in case you wanted to know.

More details:
The 34-year-old woman stopped to wait for a northbound train to pass at 36th Street and Marlborough Drive N.E. and then stepped in front of an oncoming southbound train.

So that explains it. She saw the lights, stopped, and a train passed. Brain fart occurs and she doesn't look for a train coming the other way.

I can totally see that happening. One train coming from the other direction immediately after the first one went by, combined with her listening to headphones...

Plus, she might have thought the noise was from the train that just passed.

I feel sorry for the person she was with. He probably yelled at her but didn't have time to do anything. Imagine if that was your friend, girlfriend, or wife... Terrible.

But she didn't hear the horn blast or the screeching brakes. Another reason to turn off your music and pay attention to what's going on around you.

She probably couldn't hear him over the music she was playing. Terrible thing for him to witness.
