I have always said Vancouver is the worst city in Canada. Now the rest of the world is getting to see it for what it is.
The scary part is if they kill or arrest one, they say 3 more join the gang. It gives the people something to rally around and get more members.
Sad stuff, 2010 should be funny to watch from my little island over here

Suspect in the home invasion picked up.
Link really has nothing more interesting to say than that, so I wouldn't bother clicking it if I were you.
Unless... of course... it's actually a link to something else...

What?? I live in kits and havn't had anything stolen or vandalized. Most people in this neighborhood are granolas or yuppies and wouldn't steal a thing. I've never been to a safer feeling community in my life.

Nothing will ever change. Gangsters have been around since time immemorial only nowadays it seems to be an equal opportunity employer that cut swaths across ethnic or even gender lines. I guess that's democracy for ya.
Put 'em in prison? Seems to me that's the big incubator for gang formation. Business as usual.
You got to get at kids early -- six, seven, eight years old. Teenagers are already hardwired one way or the other.

So two gunmen bust into a home and one of the gunmen shoots one of the brothers three times. The other brother wrestles the other gunman down, takes his gun and shoots one of the gunmen dead. Both brothers survive. Nice job!

If you look closely towards history, I think you'll find feudal systems have a lot in common with gang dynamics.

Vancouver is a great city as long as you stay away from the downtown eastside. Most people have nothing to worry about as long as they aren't involved in criminal activities. There are major gang problems in alot of Canada's big cities. Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto have had the most prominent issues with gangs.

Wouldn't rush to judgment on that one. The media basically reported the one-sided second hand story of the mother and sister, who weren't there at the time.
There are at least two things which raise doubts about the story reported so far.
First, the attack appears targeted, and the names of the brothers and the supposedly intended target are, at least, fairly similar.
Second, it doesn't look like the kid just wrestled the gun away defending his brother - it looks like his brother got shot, the shooter ran, and the kid chased him out of the house and then got the gun from him and shot him. Not very many unarmed people would chase down a person with a gun who was trying to run away from them.
Having said that, it would seem both brothers are clean - something which is unlikely of anyone who's managed to be in the gang business long enough to have people trying to kill them.
I think a wait and see approach is in order. But if this story checks out, sure, give the kid a medal.

Gangs go where there's economic opportunity. Vancouver has a seedy underbelly ripe for exploitation.

Vancouver is the ideal city for gangs. It has:
1. A large population.
2. A large port system.
3. A location close to a major American city.
4. Lax sentencing for drug offences.
5. High social tolerance for drugs.
6. The application of Charter protection.
7. At least one area where drug use is a social institution.
8. A relative deficiency of police resources.
9. A relative deficiency of prosecutorial resources.
10. Beautiful weather in February.
Conditions are just about perfect.

And thats your opinion. The downtown eastside is the least of my worries you can walk through there without getting shot, you just get bugged for change.
Have you ever lived in Vancouver or just a visitor? If the latter then I can see where you get your opinion from.

The VGH ER department was in quasi lock down when the guy who got shot came in, because of concerns over retribution killings happening in the hospital....this sort of thing doesnt happen for innocent bystanders.

It's really not as bad as you're making it out to be. I've lived here all my life and have never personally run into much trouble or witnessed anything worse than a drunken fight. Maybe I'm staying out of the bad areas, maybe I'm just lucky. But every major city is going to have these issues and the spotlight is on Vancouver right now because all this is happening in a short period of time. Crime is going to have peaks and valleys.
I am truly not concerned AT ALL about myself or my belongings when I leave my house or car. No more than if I lived in any other major city.

Law enforcement takes a lot of undeserved crap on this board (IMO only), so it should be noted the great job they did here.
Numerous take-downs on multiple vehicles at at least three separate locations that results in the rescue of an unharmed victim. That's some awesome coordinated work.

That is awesome...the trick is convicting these guys and making them serve anything resembling a real sentence.

Yup, and that's where our Government fails I think. The police do what they can/are allowed to do, but the criminals get out on bail (many times to re-offend) or are convicted of much lesser charges.

Well you shouldn't be else I would recommend on moving. You can't live scared else life would suck pretty bad. But I would much rather be walking through Forest Lawn at night than many parts of Vancouver.

I was mainly speaking to the point that I've heard many people on TV saying they're scared to go out at night and hell, even to the mall......thats just a bit much.
