He almost loses it and starts laughing a couple times there.
I think it's all an act, but what's the point of it all?
"Ha ha, I was acting all crazy and said I wanted to be a rap star. I sure showed you".
Ooh, good one.

Like others have been saying... its an act. He's being followed by a camera crew. That right there is all the evidence you need that this is all staged. Why would someone who is actually going through a meltdown agree to have it filmed, especially since you've 'quit acting'? Mental instability, maybe. But I, like others have said, firmly believe this will be turned into some sort of reality tv show and he'll promptly be back making movies in a few years.
Maybe he just wants an excuse to act like an idiot and let loose for a year or two with out the repercussions?
"Yeah, I was acting for that movie when I did all that blow and hookers"

It just seems a little too much to be real. I sincerely hope it is a Kaufman thing and not a true meltdown as he is an incredible talent. I'm working under the assumption it's staged, so I found the clip to be hilarious. I know a lot of people don't like Letterman, but I find him extremely funny.

I can't believe anyone is gullible enough to think this is real.
Andy Kaufman anyone?

So does anybody know if he's got his own camera crew following him around or anything to document all of this?

The funniest thing has to be the Yousef Islam tag for this thread. That's hilarious!

I watched this last night and was totally not impressed...with Joaquin's silly act.
I wish Dave had given it to him a bit harder...like he did with Paris Hilton or that d-bag from the Hills (ya I know, which one). Dave can rip people with the best of them.

I believe in the Pony Power

That is some weird stuff. I don't know what to think. On one hand I have to think its a big joke otherwise why would Letterman let it continue for so long. When Glover was one and wigged out Letterman ended it pretty darn quick.
But then again - Phoenix seems completely out of it and at times angry. I wonder if he is contractually obligated to promote the movie, but since he is no longer interested in films, this is his way of handling it?
Odd odd stuff.

That was funnier the second time I watched it. Phoenix's subtle reactions to Letterman's jabs are hilarious.
I am curious though why he is getting such praise for his past acting. I didn't like Walk The Line specifically, and I don't think I've been a fan of any movie he's been in. What is so great about him?
