No love for Zipang?

My 2 favorite places are zipang and wa's. (of course they're not really near kensington)

Last time I was at Sushi Ichiban, they had warm sushi (bleh).

Can you post what you think of this place? I've heard it's VERY good but there's only a couple of tables.

I'm always up for trying different sushi places.

There is also a new all you can eat place in Calgary, outside of sushi ichiban and sumo, isn't there?

Zipang has has the best sushi in Calgary, hands down. And I've spent copious amounts of time in Japan.

Grey Eagle Casino on Wednesday Asian nites. AWESOME! and it's only $15. Well $115 if you lose $100 at the Luongo table before you eat.

Alright, just got back, so here goes.

We ordered

Assorted sashimi
appetizer tempura
3 rolls -

avocado/crab meat with fresh eel
tuna/salmon/sweet potato tempura
salmon with tuna tataki roll

Sashimi - usual fare of tuna/salmon/yellowtail/surf clam and shrimp

The tuna and yellowtail weren't fresh, pretty blah. The salmon was ok. Surf clam is surf clam and shrimp is shrimp, not awesome but not bad.

I would not order sashimi from them.

Tempura - We saw the guy make the batter fresh and fry the tempura. The tempura was good. Would order it again.

Rolls - Avocado/crab meat with fresh eel was awesome! basically a California roll with eel on top. (shredded crab)

salmon with tuna tataki. Not so awesome, the same non fresh tuna was used, so you could definitely taste that.

salmon/tuna/tempura roll. It was decent, couldn't taste the stale tuna. Maybe a new cut? came with a special sweet/hot sauce that looked like fish sauce because it had carrots in it. Was a nice change of pace. It was call the refreshing roll and it was refreshing.

So overall, I wouldn't go back because the fish wasn't fresh.

But the 1 roll that was good, was really really good. The tempura was excellent.

So maybe it was an off day? Caught the end of the fish stock? maybe they get their fish on thursdays? Who knows.

Pricing is cheap and portions are large.

Like I said before, El's has very strong rolls. Not a sushi/sashimi place to go.

Just type in your restaurant/address and see the violations pile up!

Cool too because it shows who holds the business permit. If people haven't noticed, a lot of the Japanese restaurants are actually owned by Chinese or Koreans. Just food for thought...

Wow, Globefish with some recent violations.

Question, anyone know what happened to Sushi Man on 10th Ave and 1st St SW?

I can't believe the Inspectors haven't been back to Sushi BBQ Inn since June last year.

Globefish: If it's good enough for Iggy, it's good enough for me!
