So, for financial reasons, we are going to cancel our cable, but we might look into trying to receive OTA if reasonable. What do I need, and what channels will I get? I live up in the NE, in martindale. Getting CTV and global HD would make the lack of cable much less hard, I think.

CFCN and Global will come in *perfectly* in HD.
Additionally, you'll get CBC (very nicely), Access (very nicely), the frenchie network, and couple other random channels that I forget.
What do you need.....? An antenna will help a lot. I attached an old stereo antenna (see pic below, but much less sophisticated) to the coax cable going into the TV. Put it near the window (eventually moved it outside) and pretty much never touched the thing again. Coat hangers and/or tinfoil loops will also work, but they look pretty stupid, lol. If you want to do this with the least possible effort, take $50 to "The Source" and get a basic antenna and enough cable to get beside the window.
As for the lifestyle....Basically, I was VERY content with peasant vision for several years. The only reason I have cable.....Hockey. Enough games (with good coverage) were available on Sportsnet/TSN coverage to make $600/year worthwhile.

Is there any advantage to getting an large outdoor antenna here in Calgary? It should be noted that I don't have any SW facing windows in my house. I could mount a decent antenna up on my chimney.
As for programming, I'll miss hockey and football, but I know people whom I can visit to watch with them, if need be.
Treehouse for my daughter will be replaced by trips to the library to borrow episodes, and we'll buy episodes from iTunes every once in a while.

Dont' know about the benefits of a large outdoor antenna...I can only comment on what worked for me (Sounds like a cop-out, sorry!). For the more specific questions, I HIGHLY suggest checking out Digital Home and their OTA Forum. http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=81
My only other pieces of advice:
1. Start simple. Once you've done this for a couple of months, you'll have a better idea what your unique situation is (line of sight issues, how weather affects things, etc) and can build a more complex system.
2. For Hockey - GAMECENTER was actually surprisingly good. If you keep high-speed internet, definitely look into it. For ~$175 it was certainly good value.

Correct. This is my biggest pet peeve about GameCentre online. Even if the team is out of the city, but on local (cable) TV, the game is blacked out.
It annoys me to no end, there are so many times I'm working or whatever and would love to have the game on the laptop, but can't. I'm sure its because of advertising and how they sell advertising spots to various markets, but I'm paying for a premium service dammit, and I'm a customer of the NHL too, not just the ad companies!

100% of locally broadcast games are blacked out, yes.
I apologize - I should have mentioned in the original post that Gamecenter is solid value for watching hockey, but not necessarily Flames Hockey.
For Flames games, I have little doubt that a proxy and some cleverness couldn't solve the situation.....but I don't advocate anything that goes against the ToS

Just an FYI for being out of town....(Might be a Captain Obvious statement)
I did call tech support a couple of times (while on the road) and got Flames games. Not sure if there's an automated way of doing it (never really bothered to check) but I'd call them up, tell them I was in Seattle/Omaha/Wherever and wanted to get the Flames game. Tech guy asks for the IP Address from the hotel room, and a couple minutes later the feeds available. Of course, you gotta call back when you get home or *nothing* works!

Necroing my own thread here. I just setup a 60" plasma with a DTV antenna I got with a digital USB TV tuner and I'm trying to manually add digital OTA HD stations.
I've managed to find CFCN @ channel 36. Is there anything else out there? I thought Global was on 41 but I get no signal while CFCN comes in clear as day.

Strange, Global's website claims it's been up since June 2009 and people have recieved it before. Is it just offline right now?

There was some talk on the digital home forums about the global feed being out. It likely won't be out for long, and perhaps they are introducing a higher powered transmitter.
(That's from my memory, I could be a bit off)
