After a couple experiences with this method unintentionally in the past few years, I can feel I can present "Dr. Browna's Start-yo-year Right" diet.
a)Get sick. Real sick. New Years Eve drink too much, go out in a tshirt and make snow angels. If New Years Eve won't work, assume that every day in Janauary in Calgary will be -3 and dress appropriately until applicalbe level of sickness is achieved.
b)Sickness must be able to render one bed ridden for at least 2 days, and away from place of employment for at least 3. Constant regurgitation and explusion of food and other matter is essential.
c)When able to stand and balance for more then 30 seconds, 5 times a day, get on scale.
d)Enjoy the 6-9lbs immediate weight loss! Avoid solids for the next few days until you have enough energy to go work out and watch the next 4 or 5 pounds melt away within a week!
ps I'm not a doctor

I set a very simple goal for myself - do not miss the gym for 2 days in a row. This seems to have kept me motivated. Like a previous poster said, it will feed itself as you see improvement.
I would set small goals - ie 5-10% of your body weight going at a pace of a pound a week if you are looking to lose weight. I would recommend going on your clothing as muscle weighs more than fat, this causes a lot of people endless frustration. Also, going on a treadmill is not about the few hundred calories you burn while on it, it is about increasing your body's metabolic rate - ie use more energy/calories all day.

Don't laugh, but if you can't get to the gym, Wii Fit is okay. Get some hand weights, and you can have a decent work-out at home.
My trainer is nice too:

Maybe to go against the grain I will resolve to get as fat as possible in 2009. It won't be easy, but as long as I keep my goals short-term and reasonable, I should be able to overhaul my lifestyle into one of utter sloth and unimaginably bad eating habits. I will start slow - supersizing side items at fast food, adding an extra sandwich and a desert maybe. I will try my best not to move for as many hours of the day as possible - parking as close to work as I can and taking the always taking the elevator, even if it's only for one floor. I won't take any days off - no accidental pick-up sports with friends, or walks to the convenience store for Ruffles, Twinkies and Pepsi; no, I will have Safeway deliver these items to me, and I will instruct the delivery person to come right into my house and give them directly to me while I am sprawled out on the sofa, feeding my mental sloth tenacity by watching only commercials for unhealthy foods and reading tabloids about Oprah Winfrey's inspirational weight gains. I will start the Michael Phelps diet after I have added a few dozen pounds, eating 4 fried egg sandwiches before a strenuous morning of doing absolutely nothing, and making sure that I finish every crumb of a full pepperoni pizza before bed each night. I will wash the pizza down with a cup of hot lardlate. I will need those calories to fuel my blubber! And I will do anti-situps: lying on my back and forcing my gut to expand out as far as I can to stretch the tissue and create more room for fat cell hypertrophy.
With any luck I will need bypass surgery several times by the end of the year and perhaps as 2010 rolls in I might even be dead entirely.
Wish me luck!

If you can afford it I would highly recommend a personal trainer. At least to get you started. I see so many people weight training at the gym making numerous mistakes that would either lead to injury, or really limit your gains. A trainer can teach you proper technique and different ways to train to eliminate plateauing.

Ideally it would be great.
Unfortunately there are a large amount of personal trainers who know less than the average gym goer. There's a 2 week program minimum to get hired for many gyms (I wouldn't trust anyone with limited experience and only 2 weeks of education), and some don't even require it!
If you're looking for a personal trainer, make sure they have plenty of years of experience and try to find out some things about them before hiring!

Not good for folks who don't have a ton of disposable income though.

This is who I use.

Some of the trainers have over 10 years experience. I would agree with your comments on personal trainers. That is why I decided to go with these guys. Lots of experience and great reputations.

I just joined a spin class. I have a treadmill at home, but I don't feel like I ever really push myself enough to get any real benefit from it, so I had to do something else. I need someone to kick my behind so from what I am hearing of spin classes, this should be good for me. I am a little nervous though.
Anyone ever been in one or liked it? I am pretty sure I have asked that here before, but I'll ask again.

I was "forced" to join one with my ex - we made a deal, I agreed to join the free spin class with her.
Its always better to go to the gym with someone, that way you can push each other.

I was going to post the same rant. I hate this time of year and am dreading going to the gym today after work. Being the 1st work Monday in the new year... the resoluters will be out in full force today. I am worried that I won't get an elliptical or treadmill and will be delegated to the bike.
I can't wait until March when they all fall off the wagon again...heh.
My fitness resolution is to once again cut back my beer drinking to 1 night on the weekend instead of 2.

My gym was actually busy this morning at 5:30am. Not even close to how busy it is after work, but still noticably busier than usual. Out of 12 treadmills only two were available.

Try getting on it while watching the Sens play. It'll help with the frustration and at least you'll feel you spent your time productively when the game is over.

I managed to lose 30 pounds over the course of last year, from February-December, and I'm going to attempt to match that this year, which would put me right around where my goal weight is. Basic plan is to eat healthy, well-proportioned meals, healthy snacks, drink a ton of water, and work out at least 4 times a week, 30-60 minutes per workout.
It got me this far, gotta stick with what's gotten you there.

Just over a year ago I started going to the gym at 5:30am. You will get a few New Years Resolutioners going that early. But only a handful.
|
The thing that always makes me laugh about the newbies are the ones who go on a machine for like 10 minutes then go out for a smoke break.
Step one for anyone trying to become healthier and more fit should be to quit smoking.
