Is that meant to discourage stealing the carts? Everyone knows this and carries dollar coins for when they go shopping?

Not so much for the stealing of the carts, but rather returning them to the right areas so people dont leave random carts everywhere in the parking lot.

They will give you the needed change at the front service desk in the store if you did not bring your own change -- usually they will just give you the needed change too, you don't need to break a bill or anything.
It encourages people to return the carts of course (saving paid man hours for staff to go collect them) but when you return the cart it locks to the one in front of it which means people cannot simply take carts either.

For those of us who are insane or just so stupidly procrastintingly dumb that I still need to shop....
How late is Wal-Mart open TONIGHT? (Christmas Eve)

^^ Well, let's start off with the fact that out of the 4 major chains in Calgary, 2 of them don't have deposit on their carts.
Then look at the fact that he lives in another country, and think that there may be other methods in place.
In warmer climates (like California) the carts have magnetic locks on them. Once they hit a point in the parking lot perimiter, the wheels lock. Last year in Phoenix at 2:00am at a drug store I saw kids playing "Jackass"- putting their buddy in the cart, going as fact as they can, then when the locks hit the cart and the kid would go flying.

Yup. On the Northside. Waaaay on the end of the Northside. It is much less busy than the southside Zoo Mart though. It opened up about 14 months ago. There is also a Tim Horton's, Subway, Booster Juice, some dollar store, some hair salon, La Senza, a couple other clothing stores and a Shopper's Drug Mart there too. There is also a bank, and a couple more stores should be opening within the next couple of months. Its on 26th Ave. North, just east of Uplands.

Of course I do! Like Ken0042 stated, I'm in Southern California (but I'm a she) and we don't have any sort of locks or mechanics in place for taking or returning carts. Carts at every store, grocery, Target, Wallmart, etc. are available with no restrictions. Its possible to steal the carts if you wanted to, I don't think cart stealing is a big problem in the city I live in.

Calgary does it because of all the mexicans that are flooding the city.

Wal-Mart is a world unto itself. The place creeps me out. I actually haven't shopped at one in several years now, since my kids were younger and I would hit the toy department. Some of the conversations I would hear amongst families at the check out were pretty bizarre. Seriously, strangest people ever frequent that place.

I stopped in Wal-Mart (Westbrook) about an hour ago. Yikes, that was scary.
Also, I learned that when you leave your shopping until the last day, some things you look for may not be in stock.

Its true! I don't know what it is about that place, but it really brings out all kinds.
About a month ago, I decided to go into the Walmart at Southland and McLeod at like... 10:30pm, for no real reason. Just seemed like a good idea because I was there.
The very first thing I see is an extremely large woman pushing a shopping cart charging at a very young boy screaming "MOOOOVE BOY!!!!!" and then she hits the boy, and keeps going.
Every single person I saw there made me feel depressed.

Wrong. The parking lot was 3/4 full. Inside there were all kinds of interesting people. People in sweatpants or decked out in their best Nascar gear. People who barricade the aisles with their shopping carts so they can play with the classy animatronic Santa decorations and laugh hysterically at them while I try to squeeze by. Many different ethnic backgrounds were represented. I may have seen some circus folk.

Yeah, how was Rob Kerr and his family? Does he look as pissed off as he seems on Overtime?

I just thought I'd mention that on my way to Toys R Us yesterday morning I was rear-ended. I wasn't even po'ed at the guy. It seemed like the perfect ending to my holiday shopping experience. I'm actually just thankful that nobody was hurt since he was driving a Yukon and could have monster trucked my car if he hit me harder.
Merry Christmas to all!

I watched a documentary about living off the grid, so this year I managed to shop in my neighbourhood (Inglewood) and went to 17th ave, all walking, as a little part in living off the grid. Everything I purchased was from independent shops and the items seemed to be more personal than they have been in previous years. Best part: Never stepped foot in a mall for Xmas!!!
