Awesome. So what you are saying is this year is the last winter we will ever have in Calgary? Sweet!

You are right, likely won't affect us this winter. But next winter it will.

The snow and slippery compounds the speeding through intersection issue though...honestly, if you are driving THAT fast through an intersection that is likely to turn red, you deserve a ticket.

Not to play debbie downer/ devils advocate, but shoudnt we be doing the speed limit while driving on icy streets..? The red light cameras are not a new idea so this whole slamming on the brakes thing isnt the issue.

Does this work 100% of the time? Or is it just at a certain angle? And where can I buy one? I've seen some clear spray you can put on your plate but not sure if it works. There's lot of those covers on plates around the city though.

You'll also get a ticket for those plate covers.

Nope....you'll get them in the mail. In the past 7 yrs or so I've gotten over 10 Photo radar tickets and have only been pulled over once (warning) so I think it would be worth it.

$100 radar detector would have avoided 10 photo radar tickets.

Obviously, but I am speaking more to the actions of oneself. Cover your plate, risk a ticket. Speed and run red lights, risk a ticket.

There are already red-light cameras, all this is doing is catching people who speed through intersections. If you speed through intersections on roads like we have now, you deserve every ticket you get and I hope to god someone takes your license away.

I wasn't aware that they pick up photo radar as well. May be a good xmas present for myself.

A cash grab, but a good cash grab. I'd much rather have people who get tickets fund the police than have it come out of my taxes.

There have been some states where red light cameras have been shown to cause as many accidents as they prevent, but as far as I know, that's not the case here.

And frankly, if you speed up to make it through lights, you are doing the exact kind of behaviour that the red light cameras were always watching out for in the first place. Ever since I found out that the red light cameras are more likely to give a ticket if you are accelerating through the light, I've worried about them much less.

Photo radar in Calgary uses Ka band radar, which is easily detected.

Cops in Calgary on the side of the road shooting the gun almost exclusively use LIDAR, laser radar, which your detector will not pick up until you get shot. Meaning, radar detectors don't really do anything for laser.

But if you do any highway driving, they are invaluable as RCMP and Sheriff's always have their radar on. I normally pick up their band before I even see their car.

Actually, I have been given a photo radar ticket for 6km/h over a posted 60km/h limit. It was about 15 months ago.

10% above the speed limit is probably when they will start giving tickets. Anything below that could be someones speedo being out of calibration ect..

Does anyone know for sure if it is illegal in Calgary/Alberta to use a plate cover that prevents your plate from being photographed but can be viewed from directly behind?

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to have anything covering your plate. I'll try to find that quote again.

Even license plate frames can be illegal. Not sure what the law is in Alberta, but I have a friend here who had a yellow tinted cover over his plate and the cops gave him a ticket for it. You could still see the letters and I doubt it would obscure photo radar or red light cameras.

Not only is it illegal, they don't work - at least to prevent road side cameras from getting a clear view of the plate.
