My top 5.
5. Metal Gear Solid 2 - Oddly I haven't liked any other metal gear game and this one often gets bashed for being one of the worst.
4. NHL 94 - I probably played this almost every day for about 3 years. At one point I could actually score a breakaway goal with my eyes closed.
3. LittleBigPlanet - The originality of this game is second to none imo. I remember dreaming about a game like this when I was a little kid.
2. Shadow of the Colossus - Much like LBP above I love this game for bringing something I hadn't seen before. Artistically done and extremely engaging.
1. Goldeneye - I honestly question if a game will ever get a balance this strong again between single player and multiplayer. It's both my favorite single player game and favorite multiplayer game of all time. Rocket Launchers in the Temple FOR LIFE.

The Rock Band games/platform has to be given serious consideration for this gen. This game has held almost all of my gaming attention since February.
And to throw another platform into the mix, the Advance Wars series on the GBA and DS are sublime games.

Big shout-outs to Ninja Gaiden Black for the XBOX as the awesomest game that ever awesomed; GTA IV on the 360 as the only game to every make you care about the character on an emotional level; and Tie Fighter on the PC, for being the game I lusted after relentlessly more than any other video game ever.
Also, props to Wii Sports for being the all-round best sports game ever.

1. Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time (N64): My sister and I put hours into this game when we were younger, and I probably would still pick it up and play it for hours. Thoroughly enjoyed this game.
2. Super Mario World - (SNES): A classic for me and challenging to find all the secrets to get that little Star by the File on the Title screen.
3. Donkey Kong Country (SNES): I don't think I've seen this one mentioned yet, but another game I just love playing.
4. Mario 64: beats Sunshine and Galaxy easily for me.
5. Super Smash Bros (pick any one)
My picks are the games I love playing, maybe not necessarily the best, but still solid games.

that was one i also wouldn't have thought of, but the minute i saw it, remembered how fun it was. i think it was one of those games that hit at the right time for that teen demographic. just when the technology had gotten better and when wrestling really hit a peak.

The most recent games play very similar to it, but none (and I mean NONE) since have had a the 40-man battle royal where you assume the next character randomly...god 4 player was fun in that game

It's VF2. And Fire Pro Wrestling: 6 Man Scramble should be on that list.

Actually, both VF 1 and 2 were on Saturn.
And Fire Pro should totally be on the list

Wow! I forgot that they had a pseudo pc-like contraption. It went the way of the dodo-bird even before the Commodore Vic 20 and TRS (Trash) - 80.

I am generally anti-Console, but I'll include the few console games that have forced me to buy their particular system.
Console:
GoldenEye -"Why are you guys always walking sideways? Strafing is faster!" Also, remember the thing where you can get Bond to dual wield 2 different guns with the right combination of button mashing? Also that moment when you realize you just walked up to a Proximity Mine.
Gran Turismo series - I'll never forget how crushed I was when I found out (and ran into) the 100-car limit in GT2.
MarioKart64 - Block Fort
Tecmo Superbowl -The 110 yard pass cannot be beat, nor can the music. Or the cheerleader-filled halftime.
PC (The real way to play video games)
Civilization Series (especially Civ2) -I've spent too many hours of my life in Civ2 moving units down multi-continent railroad lines because the game's GoTo feature is garbage.
Fallout series - In FO1 and FO2 you never knew which dialogue option might cause someone to initiate combat, leaving you with the decision of reloading a save, or wiping out the whole town. FO3 is different but great in its own way.
HalfLife 1&2, CounterStrike - CS is probably the game I've spent the most hours of my life playing. I used to be the unchallenged king of the P228. Also the APC in all its dangerous glory on Siege.
Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 - The "ohhhhh" moment in Kotor1, and force persuading 2 thugs to jump into a bottomless pit in Kotor2.
Desert Combat (BF1942 mod) - This was totally better than the original game, although I'm biased towards modern weaponry. Anyone play DCX with the rocket-boosted DPVs? Great times, that sadly BF2 couldn't quite match.
Honorable Mention (console & PC):
SimCity series
BioShock
Portal
System Shock 2
Deus Ex
Ultima Online
Super Mario Brothers 3
M.A.X.
Empire Earth
Doom 2
Grand Theft Auto series
RB6: Raven Shield
Shadows of the Empire (snowspeeder level)

If you like this one, you absolutely must play its predecessor, Ico. The journey is good, the ending is breathtaking.
