Throw Your Arms Around Me by Pearl Jam. I've only listened to the original by Hunters and Collectors a few times and it was after I'd already heard Pearl Jam's cover version but it's an awesome song.

Im surprised that theres not more punk/ska bands mentioned so far, since so many punk bands these days do covers
maybe because its very debatable as to whether or not the punk versions are better...they are definitely higher energy

I know a lot of people who didn't even think that was a Beatles songs, stupid Wonder Years. I personally think it is beyond horrendous how he took such a beautiful song and slowed it down and added his nails on a chalkboard voice to it.

Believe it or not, there is a fan taping of Pearl Jam playing this during a warmup session. No vocals, unfortunately, but its very definitely the Wreck.
I'm a huge fan of Seal and he's latest cd, Soul, is an all-cover album with classic songs: A Change is Gonna Come, It's a Man's Man's Man's World, Stand by Me, If You Don't Know Me by Now...and many more. I really do recommend it.
i think if i didnt have work that needed to be done, I would just spend all day posting covers in this thread...I still may!

I actually think the context of the songs is basically the same. Both had dealt with problems, both had drug abuse, both felt their lives felt a bit empty. It is basically an apology/if I had another shot song.
Within the context of The Downward Spiral I think TR's version basically means exactly the same thing as Cash's version.
I think it's the age difference that I notice. I always saw Reznors as a downward spiral as you say but I see Cash's as sort of a sending off song.
I really like how Cash sang the song. Granted it wasn't really an artistic direction he chose to go in, but the fact that his health was failing and his voice was weak made for a very sincere sounding song imo. Not that TR didn't sound sincere, I just found I could relate to that version more than the NIN one.
My favourite is The Clash's version of "I Fought The Law".
It looked like someone posted a video, though I didn't click so I'm not sure, but All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix should be the obvious No. 1.
Also, I often see "You Really Got Me" by Van Halen on these lists as being better than the original. I disagree. The Halen version is fine. But for the power and impact the song had at the time and on the future of rock music, the original should be respected as an untoucheable classic.
"With a Little Help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker is an amazing rendition. I remember often hearing that song as a kid and thinking it was great. Then when I bought Sgt. Pepper's, the Beatles version was relatively underwhelming. Also amazing is the cover was done just a year or two after the original.
Led Zeppelin's first two albums are (literally?) full of great cover jobs.
