Highly recommend Bolero's one of my favorite Calgary restaurants for value. $35 and I can easily eat $100 plus worth of meat. A close 2nd is the many all-u-can eat sushi restaurants for value.

Bolero and Gaucho are both very good. Gaucho is a little bit cheaper, the meat is for the most part better, but the pineapple at Bolero is much better (and IMO, worth the extra money you pay).
Can't go wrong with either place.

I'm calling BS on this. Even if you're going for a top of the line cut of beef, you're still looking at over 4 pounds of meat to get close to $100. I'd be shocked if anyone can eat that much meat _easily_.

It's a shame Smugglers is taking so long to finish off the web site for Bolero (and the other restaurants) The company I used to work for designed sites for them they just haven't finalized them yet I guess because they aren't up. The design is awesome, and would be a great promoter of the place. Oh well.
Anyway, Bolero while good doesn't hold a candle to any Churascaria in Brasil. The original restaurants are amazing. If you think you get fed at Bolero you need to go to Brasil. You literally get swarmed on by the Gaucho's, you MUST turn your indicator to red a couple of times or you'll get overwhelmed. Just fantastic food down there for 10-15 bucks.

Yeah the one I went to in Vancouver many many years before Calgary got one was the same; you had to use red a lot. In Calgary we went with some friends, and they were asking "what's the point of the lights thing."
Eventually we laid it on its side for yellow which for us meant "Pineapple only please".

Yep, we did the same. I think they should just get some bulk Pineapple order and do up a couple dozen of them. We've made our own grilled pineapple on camping trips, get some liquid smoke and shake a bunch of Cinnamon on it and then grill away over the fire. It makes a reasonable facsimile.

The first time I went I hit the meat hard. I couldn't get enough fast enough and walked out of there feeling like I was going to explode. I couldn't look at red meat for about 10 days after that, so the trick is to pace yourself and don't load up on potatoes and stuff in the salad bar. I found taking a nice plate of salad, the southwest style with corn is my fav, and slowly munching on it during the whole meal makes the whole thing easier. Also, don't order pop with it--stick with wine or water.
When the kid comes buy with the meat, just get small hunks chopped off. I'm like most guys and want a big old slab slapped down there, but really just get little bits and then at the end ask for them to bring by your fav once again.
My one issue, then never seem to have enough of the bacon-wrapped chicken--that, by far, may be the best thing on the menu. I like the alctra and picahna as far as red meat goes. Also, the tres leches is a good one for dessert, if you have room.

I have been to both, I would say that the pineapple at Bolero is better, but everything else is better at Gaucho. I think they add a little cinnamon to the outside at Bolero which gives it that extra oomph.
The meat at Gaucho is prepared better I found. They have less selection on their hot buffet, but if I had to pick between the two it would definitely be Gaucho. Gaucho is much smaller, so the meat is able to retain heat in doing the rounds.
That being said, Bolero is still a good restaurant and people going there will definitely enjoy it.

Do you know where it is?
I drove right by the place, and had to call to get directions. THere is no Boleros sign you can see from the road. SO Make sure you know how to get there.
Definitly eat the pineapple. SOOO good!!
All of it was good, but yeah dont fill up too much on salads, because once the meat comes you wont want to stop.
Oh and if you do go get some salad and go to look at the unmarked dressing, and see a bright red one beside what looks like Ranch, dont put it on your salad... its seafood sauce
