Thanks for the suggestions Oiler baby and mykalberta.
Dad doesn't seem to read much I noticed. Not even sure what he would. A subscription to the economist (or something similar) may be a good idea
He never got into it. My parents are not really outdoorsy people. We generally just take our parents out for dinner and a fancy bottle of wine. Actually I had it covered until recently. There is a device that can transcribe old vinyl records into digital format. Except we found out Dad already ordered it, so we're back to square 1

My 17 year old sister asked me to get her a novel for Christmas. Would anyone here happen to know what a good novel for a 17 year old girl is?

Any suggestions for a 6 year old girl, but is not the standard Toys R US/Hannah Montana/Dora the Explorer toys?
Something unique she could remember and not just a toy she's done with in a month. Something $200 or less. Any ideas?

I know my cousins love that series about the vampire love story? It was just released as a movie a while ago but I can't remember the name.
Edit : Google returns "Twilight" as the name, but I have no idea if that was the books they liked or not.

How about getting her lessons to something she would like...or paying for an activity she would enjoy. My friend recently got her 7 year old riding lessons at Half Moon Bay. The little girl loved riding the little horse she got and nwo has a newfound interest in horses.
Another friend of mine took his son (who was 5) swimming with the dolphins at Sea World I think it was. The little boy loved it.
Seeing that might be hard in Calgary in the winter, maybe going skiing or skating or something like that which you can do in Calgary or surrounding area that would be fun for the little one?

I just thought of something to get mom. A robotic vacuum cleaner, y'know, one of those pods that go around vacuuming your house on it's own.
Now, does anyone know where I can get one?

That's the Roomba:
http://store.irobot.com/category/ind...19&camp=Google
The thing about them is that they move in a pretty random fashion. They'll cover the entire area of a room, but you won't get the nice straight lines.

"Twilight" is good for this age. It's the first of 4 novels (you can get the whole box set at a few places). It's like "Romeo and Juliet" but with vampires (no gore though). It's written by Stephanie Meyer and extremely popular (up there like Harry Potter, but more of a love story for teens).
If you can't find the box set but think you'd like to get them all for her, the 4 books are; Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.

How about new soccer cleats, if he plays that, balls for any of the sports, they have some pretty cool soccer balls you can buy at most sporting goods stores.
Jerseys, hats, etc. from teams he likes.
10 year old boys will always love Lego, no matter what else they are into.

Do a search on redflagdeals.com I'm pretty sure somebody posted one there for cheap this week. I just don't recall what store they said had it on sale.

Is it really lame to make my boyfriend a present?
I've already bought him all the typical gifts for holidays and birthdays, like a watch, a camera, lots of clothes, etc. I want to do something more original this year... but I don't want it to be too cheesy or anything.
Guys... advice? Would you think it was lame if your girlfriend made something? What are good ideas of things to make?
I am SO lost for gift ideas this year... friggin' Christmas.

Throwing this in here as It's probably not worth its own thread.
Does anyone remember this toy/game?
It was basically a little board obstacle course that you had to negotiate a ball bearing around.
First part was 2 wires that moved out and in that the bearing went over. Then some moveable humps. Another bit was a magnet that you lifted the bearing round with and the final bit was like a cup on an arm that you lifted the bearing up and over and finished by hitting it against a bell.
There was a little timer. Game was for approx 6-10 year olds and you could spend hours on it.
Anyone remember it and if it is still made?

Probably too late for something like this, but my wife got a picture that I had dry mounted for an early Christmas present. It is huge and had to be done in 4 sections, the picture measures out at roughly 6.5' x 4.5'. The actual picture cost me nothing because I had a high res image to start with, emailed it to a buddy in Peace River who has access to a printer that can do 4x8 foot pics. Anyway here is the end result.
Not sure if anyone remembers the poster they handed out after the 03-04 run. They were the Herald front pages of each series win, she had those dry mounted a few years back.
I love these as presents, pics don't cost much it is the framing that kills ya but the end result is worth it.
