It probably has to do a lot with how you personally deal with issues like this in real life with your own friends.

Personally in situations like this with people that I am friends with it would be assumed that it was free if I were offered or offering. Therefore, form my viewpoint I couldn't imagine even asking for money from a friend when offering the ticket, let alone waiting until after the game. That is just how it works with the friends that I have dealt with in this type of situation.

While it may not work that way with everyone I still do think that if you are offering the ticket up to someone you should be clear what the ticket costs so that said person can decide if they want/can go. It should be assumed to be complimentary because the person making the offer never mentioned money when asking you if you wanted to attend.

I guess when I look at it as the guy in my circle of friends with season tickets. If I am not going to the game I like to get some money back for them since I could always post them on here and break even on them. I always ask if they want to BUY tickets. There are so many free coporate tickets floating around that I think it is worth being clear.

On the other hand if I ask someone to go to the game with me I don't expect them to pay but I think I do expect them to ask how much so I can say oh just by me a beer. I think that is the social courtesy of not being cheap of always offering to pay.

So both are at fault the first guy for not specifying payment and the second guy for not immediately asking how much for the tickets.

Edit: After answering the poll I picked option 3 but was supprised to see that very few blame the second person as if there was only two choices I would have picked the person not following the normal social convention of offering to pay.

I would have asked/offered to pay, and for sure bought beer if the tickets were free.

But I chose the seller. If that were me and the money was the key part of the deal, I'd be crystal clear up front. No way I'd expect someone to pony up before the game starts, paid in advance, unless that were clear up front.

Unless they specified otherwise, I would've assumed they were free. Whenever a friend phones me to say 'Hey I've got a spare ticket to the game tomorrow, do you want to come?" then I think its free. If its not free, the friend will usually say something like "Hey, I've got an extra ticket for tomorrows game, just $50. Wanna take it?" or something along those lines.

But thats just with people I know quite well, so I know how it works. I'm pretty sure that if it was someone who I hadn't known for too long or something, I'd offer to pay.
