No promises.

I'll be in Calgary from the 15th to Jan. 7th--hoping to check out a little shinny also. Let me know what you find out. You just going to outdoor rinks or to an actual drop-in time at an indoor rink.

The only ones who didn't were the goalies....but they're all fags anyways so it didn't really matter.
I'm a goalie and when we play with people like that I usually just let them score, or at the most I'll make some half-assed attempt by throwing my stick out to try to stop it. I'm in a hockey class at the UofA right now and we have two girls from Australia in our class who can barely skate, and I let them score a couple on me. But when I did, I saw our teacher throw his head up in disgust and I heard him say "come on", as if I'm just that bad and she burnt me with her 2mph shot while she walks on her skates. He grades me, so now because of him I have to go full out and stop it when they come in on me, I feel bad about it every time.

Really, how stupid can you be?? Some people are idiots...

Just had to bump this thread, since it had to do with what I was mentioning in my last post here. So today my teacher decided to grade me on how I defend breakaways, and picks 5 people to try to score on me. For one of em, he picked one of the Australian girls that can barely skate. What am I supposed to do? I feel stupid getting all jacked up and trying to stone someone who's having a tough time just getting from centre ice to my crease, but at the same time, if I let her score he'll probaby penalize me severely. Thank God she wiffed and didnt even hit the puck, so it never came up.

Hmm. I can remember having goalies let me score because I'm female,5'6' and not really big. When I realized that...THAT made me not want to come back. Thanks to my attitude I got a black eye and broken bridgework last Sat. but I wouldnt have it any other way.

This is a great thread for a hockey wannabe like myself! It gives me confidence to give it a try.

I'm planning on getting some skates for Christmas, and getting out there. I want to get the basics down before my son is old enough to play. I'm going to take a few lessons, and there's an instructional hockey league here as well. Ice time is limited as we only have one rink here in a city of 100,000.

Can anyone recommend some decent entry level skates? I tried on a few pairs this weekend and the most comfortable were the Easton S3 and the RBK 5K pump. I'm assuming whichever are the most comfortable would be the best. I have a wide foot, and the RBK seemed to be best for that. I haven't been able to try any Mission skates, any info on those?

Thanks in advance!

K here's one for the CP braintrust out there...so I'm playin some pick-up puck today(I'm a goalie btw) and this one dude on the other team keeps getting in front of me to screen the shot. Like he backs up right into my friggin crease to screen me, I'd say even his entire body was in the blue paint a couple of times. He's not bumpin me or anything, and its pretty mild hockey; half the guys weren't even wearin shoulder pads, and no-one seemed overly competitive. So I feel bad pushin him or lightly wackin him to get him outta there. But he kept doing it, it was really getting on my nerves.

So I ask you this...is it against non-contact pick-up hockey etiquette for me to get a little physical with him?(ie shovin him with my blocker, lightly wackin/pushin at the back of his skates with my stick)

I wouldn't slash him right away, but I'd definitely say "Dude, its just pick up hockey, give me some room here"

If that fails, give him the lumber.

Ya that's what I was thinkin. Actually now that I think of it, he came in and took a dig under my catcher for the puck a good couple seconds after everyone had stopped moving after I froze the puck one time. He's a little Tie Domi out there. I'm playin against him again next week, I dont think I can put up with another hour of that junk without answerin.

Sounds like a little slewfoot might get the message across if he doesn't respond to a verbal request. Just a little wack on the back of his skates.

As a fellow goalie, I'd start with giving him a shove and then progress from there. Maybe just mention it to your teammates so they can keep an eye on things

In my experience if a guy is not wearing shoulder pads he is likely a higher level player and not and indication of the opposite.

Some of the other advice you have been given might be a great way to get your a$$ kicked. If this really is pick up then you probably want to ask someone you know that is on the ice if what he is doing is really offside. The digging at your glove sounds pretty bush. But if you start handing out the lumber you escalate things pretty quick and would want to be able to back that up.

The fact you are asking probably means that is not your preferred path. If you have a buddy that is a stronger player you could ask him to speak to the guy. Or you could just yell at him and say WTF are you doing? This is shinny, back off. Most guys would get the hint. If he doesn't most of the other guys should have your back. You really should not fata with the goalie. If you start whacking his skates he might give back more than you are willing to receive and others are less likely to intervene as you pretty much started it.

Some guys think all icetime is the show and just need to be put in their place a bit.

btw a sloughfoot is when you kick the guys skates out from behind while you push him back with your arm/elbow. It is not hitting his skates with your stick. It is a severely dirty play as the guy will likely hit his head on the ice. It is a lot like having your buddy kneel behind a guy and pushing him over, except you do it all yourself. Guaranteed fight.

All is just my 2 cents.

If you were getting put on your ass during the warmup you were playing with a bunch of clowns. It's like throwing at a guy's head during batting practice.

S7: Give him a little shove, and maybe a little wack. If he gets out of line just tell him that if he wants the prime real estate he'll have to pay the price.

Then he'll know you're not taking it overly serious, but that you still don't want him all up in your face. Basically I think you can be as competitive as he is being. If he's only screening and not bumping you a somewhat gentle shove or light whack will do. No need to start a confrontation in a friendly pick up game.

I agree with that. However if that fails speak to the team captain/manager; or whoever is responsible for the ice time. Goalies can make or break shinney; you can always have a fun game playing 3 on 3, but with no goalie it really isn't much fun.

The guy might not even be fully aware of what he is doing; I know some guys that I play with who have played competative hockey do things forgetting that nobody is looking to see if they should be moved up to the top line.

ahh yeah oh well btw i have been thrown at during batting practice as well. A pitcher who pitched for the Rockies Giants and most recently the rangers i believe went to my high school. He graduated before me but after he got drafted he would always come work out with us during the late fall and early winter. He was throwing BP one day and i dropped an absolute Bomb on him. He then proceded to throw at me and said " No body drops bombs off me ." I responded "uhhhh did you see your performance last year, i think most everyone in the Bigs drops bombs off you and i guess High schoolers do to.." He then charged me and wanted to fight .... Pretty funny stuff
I mean seriously , he was throwing basic BP fastballs, maybe 75-80 mph it wasnt that big of a deal that i parked one off of him
