A couple of weeks at least. I think you can track the status of the repair on Xbox.com, but I can't remember if I ever did that or if it was useful.

Apparently the 2-3 weeks they say really means about 2 months. At least it will for me.
My RROD happened in the first week of November. I called XBOX right away to get serviced...and the problems began. I ordered the email shipping labels so I could ship it out quickly. Email label never came. Tried again a couple times. Each time you wait 24 hrs for the email. Never came. Finally after about 5 service requests and a week later, I said "f*** it, send me a box"...So I wait for the box, which didn't come within the 3-5 bus days they told me..took a couple days more. Then I promptly shipped it. I've been tracking things closely to ensure I get the console back before the 24th, which is when I leave for Calgary..the best time for me to play is over christmas holidays. Last week, Dec 9, I get an email saying console repair is complete....apparently they are supposed to send you another email with tracking info once its shipped. Now, Dec 17th, no email, and the bloody thing still hasn't been shipped. If the console is fixed, how hard is it to put in a box and send it out? Certainly shouldn't take more than a week.
Anyways, call XBOX "support" today, ask them to find out why I have no tracking info, apparently its still at service centre waiting to be shipped. I tell them my situation that I'm leaving town on 24th. They tell me I have to tell purolator to hang on to it at one of their depots while I'm gone, or it gets sent back to xbox service centre. I tell them "i have no tracking number".
I had always heard about the repair being a smooth service, but its been a major pain for me and I will have been without the console for about 2 months by the time I get it again, despite every effort to act as promptly as possible from my end.
I told the guy today MS has lost me as a customer, and they have. I was even gonna buy a new laptop soon, now that will most likely become a mac. Some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced.
PS3, here I come.

So lately my xbox has trouble reading disc's. Giving me the "open tray" thing on screen instead of play game. It also occasionally tells me to "please insert the disc into an xbox 360" (I don't really understand that one at all). Is this a precursor to the RROD?

Don't you know? Ever since they've switched to intel processors, they're essentially pc's with a flavour of linux on them...
Also as regards to the xbox 360, they released it 3 known issues and had lawsuits against them. Essentially the 360 is a corvair that you have to continuously pay for multiplayer match services. (Less real death, although people have had their apartments burnt down due to faulty power supplies, fixed now though.)

Externally they are shoddily put together at times. Hey, I'm a Mac lover, but when some of the cases break and you have to use duct tape to keep it together, it's a little annoying.

Funking piece of crap.
Now I have to send it in again.

My friend had the same problem. Clear your cache on the XBOX and the game will work fine again!

Actually I managed to fix the unreadable disc error, which is another design flaw for the 360.
I put a disc in that I didn't care about, then inserted a stiff piece of paper into the drive above the disc and below the mounting assembly, and wiggled it back and forth. Took the disc out and put in NHL 09 and it now works fine.
I guess there's a problem with the drive assembly getting magnatized and not mounting the disc properly.

MS has a new motherboard/chipset (codenamed "Jasper") for the 360; is it too late, have the bad experiences to this point harmed the 360 to the point where it doesn't matter how good the product is and people will now avoid it?
And Captain, even wikipedia has info on your unreadable disk error.
Quote:
In the majority of cases, this error is caused by the adhesive that holds a small magnetic washer heating up and allowing the washer to affix itself to the metal top of the drive. After this occurs, the system can no longer spin the disk as necessary.

For me, I think it has. If we ever get out Xbox back from the Mexican repair camp, I think I'll just sell it and buy a PS3. I can't imagine how bad I'd freak out if the xbox broke again, and we had to go through a 2-3 month repair period again.

I was talking to a friend of mine a while back, and basically wondered the same thing.
It wont affect the current gen much, but all the problems and flaws of the 360 could come back and bite MS in the ass when it comes time to release the next gen system.
Now, almost everyone knows that the 360 was rushed, released with known flaws, so that way MS could try to grab the largest market share for the current generation. Its going to be hard for alot of people to trust the next gen system MS releases.

So I sent mine in November 29th, I got it back December 22nd - not too bad. They replaced the console entirely so there was no wait on a repair.

Don't buy it from Futureshop they are useless as hell, I bought the extended Warranty and everytime I go int hey tell me to call Microsoft buy it from anywhere but there, personally I'd suggest Costco because they are awesome with returns if something goes wrong.

I have a used 360 for parts that died, It's not the Red Ring though. It just stopped reading the disks after 14 months and the goofs at microsoft wouldn't fix it under warranty because it didn't have the RR. I suspect it's just the DVD drive that died but I said screw it and just bought another one.
Anybodys welcome to it as I bought the black "superduper" model and I'm told they have some different parts inside..PM me if you want to try and swap your good drive into it.
