If I'm going to say something sarcastic, I do so in comedic fashion, no matter how funny, or not, my statement is. I don't want to have to defend a position I don't have, therefore, I use coloured font, green, orange, whatever.

The downside of text only is you don't get the benifit of inflection, which for most people is the easiest way to catch sarcasm.

And now... back to the original thread.

One of my lifelong buddies is like that. I've always had to identify statements that were meant as sarcastic jokes because he just doesn't get the sarcasm bit. He's an extremely bright guy, but he's extremely literal and logical in his thought processes so he just doesn't pick up on sarcasm.
As Octothorp said, If you have to explain/underline the joke for it to be effective, then a) your joke probably wasn't comedic genius anyway, or b) the nature of the joke is totally ruined because of it's obvious setup.

Me calling colored text gay was in reference to the current thread about Clay Aiken coming out. I guess you either got it or you didn't. No need to tell anyone to laugh.

I understood your use of gay and got the joke. I just figured for the sarcasm challenged coloured text serves a useful purpose. Personally, it doesn't really matter if sarcastic text is coloured or not. Not really a big deal one way or the other.

Clearly, it's not a big deal, but i do find it sort of ruins some pretty good posts out there. If some people don't a joke on their own, I sort of think too bad so sad. I'm sure there is a ton of stuff that flies over my head too.

btw, speaking of sarcasm, anyone notice how the majority of Americans are much more literal than Canadians? wonder why that is...

that's exactly what I was going to say. Other than hearing his name in the news and seeing his name here I had no idea who this cat was.

Believe it or not, while he was on American Idol, I could not convince my girlfriend and her mom that he was gay. They thought he was straight.
