So glad to see Zaun and Wilkerson gone. I much prefer Rod behind the plate and the kids in the outfield (although I guess Lind isn't quite a kid anymore, but close)

Gillick, whose contract as general manager of the Phillies expired last Friday, will remain with the team in a different role.
So does that leave the door open for a possible move to Toronto as team president?
"If it were the right situation, I probably would be," Gillick told TSN's Michael Landsberg. "I don't think (Paul Beeston) will be interim for just a short a period of time. Paul will be here for quite a while. When Paul gets back into it, he's going to love what he is doing."

What use to work in 1993 has got to work in 2009!
I will still pay close attention to these Jays as I have for the past 20 years. I will put up with this circus up until I hear "Pat Borders will attempt a comeback after signing a 3 year deal with the Jays..."

Didn't seem like it was worth its own thread:
The Oakland A’s are close to acquiring Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday, according to a source familiar with those discussions, having agreed in principle to a deal the source believed would send outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, starting pitcher Greg Smith and closer Huston Street to the Rockies.

The Manny-to-the-Jays talk just won't stop, but I can't see it happening.

I agree, the Jays can't afford to sign players like this. With the CDN dollar droping I bet the Jays budget will decrease next year. Thus ruling out players like Manny. Teixera etc......

The Jays have over 30 million dollars coming off the books through various contracts, like Thomas, Koskie, AJ etc.
Now, if they sign someone like Brad Penny or Andy Pettite, that'll take 10-15 million off and would allow for us to add one big bat, or another pitcher or two.
If Rogers would allow for an increase of 10 million dollars, you could sign 2 Starting pitchers and Manny or Teixera.

I bet it would take excess of $20M a season to sign a player like Manny. Which would eliminate a team like the Jays... IMO
I do agree they will pursue free agents just not the top name guys... I bet they chase Burnett, Penny, Dempster, Giambi etc.........

But for Manny + 2 top starters (lets just say Lowe and Sheets), you are probably looking at a combined 50 million per season IMHO.

And thats assuming nary a dime of that has been spent on Vernon Wells, Alex Rios, Aaron Hill, or any of the solid pitching prospects we have.

No, it does take that into consideration.
They are already signed - and they got their raises. Coming off the Books are guys like Thomas, Koskie, AJ and maybe Overbay... those add up to big money.
I think CG is hoping the Jays will have a Payroll of 120+ million this year, likely we'll barely touch 100 million, but that still leaves us with the ability to add about 20 million or so to the Payroll after the opt outs/contracts ending.

Unless I'm mistaken (I briefly looked, failed to find) Wells salary escalates every year, and I think Rios' does as well.

If we run with your math, that won't get us Manny by himself.

Ideally, I would love for them to spend some money especially considering Rogers made a lot more than he expected to this year. 120-130 million would be crazy, I'm hoping for a 110 million payroll.

Wells Salary jumps by a couple million or not at all this season, but the big boost was last year.
Mostly my numbers are guestimations. But the Jays could probably add Manny by himself, no problems.
Although, that would be just about the only player we could add with the way things are looking.
The person with the final call on this is Mr. Rogers and lets be frank here... no one knows which way the team is really going to go.

Why don't we have, or chase any, Japanese players? I like watching their brand.

because you have to pay millions just for the opportunity to sign them (the really talented ones anyway)

With the CDN dollar dropping I can not imagine the Blue Jays will go with a $110 million payroll. As that is more like a ~ 135m or so... when its converted.
If anything I bet the budget is reduced due do to the CDN dollar.
