More of a shopping/lunch suggestion but Lina's Italian Supermarket is about as close as I can find to my Nonna's food.

Their Tiramisu is perfect and their pizzas and sandwiches make you understand why Romans had food orgies.

Oh and always Sicilian Cannolis. Best Cannoli I've ever had.

I'll add a couple...

Sushi Club in Kensington - Just as good as Blowfish. Some very interesting custom rolls

Ruan Thai - Best Thai food I've had in Calgary.

I'll second that one. Not quite as good as Bua Thai (when I lived in Edmonton many moons ago), but a tad better than what I've found so far in Victoria.

Maybe this thread could be a sticky?

Mrs. troutman and I tried Olives on Saturday October 25th.

1129 Olympic Way SE

Olives was developed by the same team that did St. Germain and Raw Bar at Hotel Arts. Since we really like Raw Bar, we gave it a try. This place opened around the end of Stampede 2008, and should be very busy, being so close to the Dome. It was certainly busy last Saturday, and we couldn't get a reservation for two until 8:15 pm. It is not easy to find parking, and there was nothing going on at the Dome.

My wife (an architect) liked the modern decor. It was quite dark at some tables, and hard to read the menus. It was noisy with all the background noise, and the house music was a bit annoying - all you could hear was the repetitive beat of the drums. Boom, boom, boom, boom. Seemed to be a lot of women there with their friends, living out Sex And The City.

Each table gets complimentary olives (green and black) and some light, fluffy focaccia bread. We ordered an antipasto appetizer, with nice cheeses and meats (and more olives), and we tried the calamari just added to the menu that day - I liked the tomato sauce it came with. My wife had their feature dish - parsnip ravioli. I liked it a lot, even though I normally detest parsnips. I had a great tuna steak, served on a nice polenta with another delicious tomato salsa on the side. The tuna was done just right - still a bit rare in the middle.

We enjoyed a great bottle of wine - Alpha Zeta Amarone 2003, for $95 (I think it retails for $40 to $50). Service was good - the waiter explained all of our dishes to us, though he brought the wrong bottle of Amarone at the start. We spent $180 (before tip) for everything. It is certainly over-priced, but the quality was good and we did enjoy everything. We didn't think our parents would like it, but we would recommend it to the 30-50 crowd.

To me the best restaurant in Calgary is far and away Globefish. I am sushi fanatic and it is a little more expensive than most places ($30/35 each) but the quality, originality, presentation and taste is unparalleled. It's the best sushi I've ever had in my life. Everyone I bring there, even many from Europe and South America, think it's the best sushi they've ever had. There's one in Marda Loop and one in Kennsington. Soooo good!

For steakhouses, I like Caesars, Tops and the Keg is good too. I want to go to Ruth Cris (or however it's spelled). For breakfast, I like Nelly's or the Melrose sunday brunch buffet. For Italian I like Il Giardino and Buon Giorno as well. Glory of India on 4th Ave is good for Indian food. Thai Rose Garden by the Hyatt is excellent.

I think the Calgary tower restaurant is overpriced and overrated. I don't like it.

I'm not sure about Globefish anymore. Ever since they took over that chinese rest next to them it has gone down hill. It's still as expensive but the portions seem to be a lot smaller. I don't think i'll try them for a while.

I tried momoyama a couple of weeks back. Very good food and the price is decent. On richmond road in the sw.

I'm not sure I get everyone's obsession with Globefish. I've tried it a few times, and I really didn't think it was anything spectacular. I'll admit they had some interesting rolls, but to me the taste wasn't anything to write home about.

My favourite sushi place is Sushi Bar Zipang in Bridgeland. But I guess everyone has their own tastes.

Awesome thread...I'm super excited to head up to Scarpones. We buy their gnocchi from Co-Op/Safeway, but didn't know they had an actual store here. I also want to try Lina's Italian market now...We've passed that place a million times and always say we're going to try it, but definately for sure now. And aside from the mixed reviews of the Pfanntastic Pannenkoek Haus, I think we'll give it a try as well. Great suggestions and it's great to hear what everyone thinks.

And I'm with fotze...+2 for no sushi at all!

I prefer sashimi to sushi, the mushy nature of the rice combined with seawead and the fish do not help, its like eating out a morbidly obese girl whose arms obviously don't reach, but no spitting is allowed and jerking off is also frowned upon to keep you going on to the better goal. The more rigid fish such as squid is better, mushy tuna is really tough to choke down. I think the only thnkg that allowed me to keep going is the salt in the soy sauce, love beef jerky.

That description good enough? I have really thought this through obviously.
Thankfully, that is one experience to which I cannot relate. Brutal selection of chicks in Whiteville, from the sounds. Sometimes it's better to keep one's dignity and just stay home alone and jerk off to the videos on MTV.

EDIT: Given that you've tried sushi 40 times even though you've not liked it, I'd hate to know how many fat chicks you've been through.

Ah, but this is what makes you an easy target... all she has to do is get one of her thighs on top of you, and you are stuck there until she decides to let you go.

I get claustraphobic just thinking about it.
