I don't need some store to tell me to store my item safely. If i'm going to another store my items are stored in the trunk. Why risk the possibility of something being stolen.

The only reason she complained was she was hoping the manager would have some sympathy for her situation and replace her laptop for free. Thankfully the manager didn't reward her for her stupidity.

You want them arresting people who break into vehicles?

But, just so I'm not jumped on for defending the woman... It really is idiotic to leave something like that just sitting in your car.
It is if you make no attempts to hide or say put said item in the trunk.

I like how she blamed Future Shop even though this happened in a Home Outfitter's parking lot.

I think some credit cards will replace items stolen from your car.

Many malls have signs on the entrance saying something to the effect that you should not leave valuables in plain view and they are not responsible for loss. But really, how many people give those a second thought, outside of those who were cognizant of it before.

It was a bad thing that happened, but the bad person is not Future Shop (at least not in this case), it was the thief.

If she had put the laptop in the trunk, set her car alarm, and taken her purse with her, she may still have been robbed, but she'd be a far more sympathetic victim.
Beat me to the punch. Well stated octo!

I just can't believe she left her purse in the car, with a laptop, in plain sight. Did she even lock the doors or did she just tell her kids to leave the doors open, since they would only be a few minutes?

I dunno, I see this more as a case of social darwinism. Common sense says that you do not leave valuables unattended in an easily viewable location. This woman failed common sense, that's her fault, not the store's. This is regardless of whether there is any kind of known crime spree in the area. I don't see any reason why the store should have any responsibility towards someone else's property once it leaves their store.

She was at a different store when the theft occurred. What's Future Shop supposed to do? Install security cameras throughout the city?

Lol. I remember back when I was a poster on the official board. One guy used to tell everyone that they should take things with a 'grain assault'.

What she should have done was leave her kids in the car to guard the laptop until she returned.

I'm confused... it says she parked in front of the doors at the Home Outfitters... but yet the picture shows here quite a distance away....

Anyone picture her parked literally in front of the doors blocking the handicap ramp, someone stealing her stuff in anger, her coming out to find it then quickly move the vehicle?

And instead of those sun guards that say 'SOS! I'm being RAPED!', she could have one that says 'I'm in desperate need of being made an example of!!'.

Well, that is a given, unless it is really hot out, then you turn the car off and close all the windows. I am going to make a great parent.

I didn't say the store had a responsibility, but if they know their customers are getting robbed after making big purchases, they might want to mention it to them.

And yeah, they should install security cameras throughout the city. Thousands of them. It's Future Shop, after all, so they can probably get a good deal.

Or if they are not willing to do that, maybe they should keep an eye out for people who are"watching the store", since they already know they are out there.

Malls and the police have always advertised over the years that customers should lock thier valuables in thier trunk. Smash and grab in mall parking lots have been going on for years.

So shes mad at Future Shop in Bayers Lake because she should have been warned that a Best Buy shopper in Dartmouth had a computer stolen? Different store, different town, different person.

On top of this, she drives a Lexus SUV and bought her 10 year old a $2000 laptop. How come stupid people can afford better things than I can. Life is unfair.

I'm really surprised how few people see Future Shop as having any responsibility in this. They were conscious of the fact that their customers were being specifically targeted for theft and chose not to make a policy of informing them. That seems like a pretty clear shirking of social responsibility to me. Perhaps they have no legal culpability, but they're definitely socially irresponsible.
