Should make for an unpleasant bus ride home. Lovely!

I'm in Toronto (well, the GTA) currently, and I've been running around in the lightning and thunderstorms they've been having. It's ridiculous. Nothing says professional like showing up to a meeting looking like a drowned rat. I would take a little sunshine right about now.
Having said that, normally I don't like the heat. I am the type that burns in seconds, so every time I go out, it's an 8 hour ordeal of slathering SPF 80 all over me. I am all about the fall and winter.

you know whats gonna really suck, when its only 14 on thursday and we'll be bitching about how damn cold it is because we're used to this 30+ crap.
according to the weather network it feels like 36 right now... and we're not even at the usual high point of the day yet.

I can't decide which irritates me more about extremely hot weather in Calgary: sleeping at night or riding transit. The other day I was in a bus and the windows were broken. They wouldn't open and were welded shut. Not sure about the emergency exits but it wouldn't have surprised me to see a big bead of bad welding holding that thing in place too.

It's one of the few times I actually want to stay at work longer to enjoy the AC. Gets worse when I walk home while still in my dress clothes. I keep forgetting to bring a change of clothes to walk home in

It was 30 C / 90 F in my condo last night. My air conditioner doesn't work well when it's this hot...the sun and heat just overwhelm it. I think I had it set too cold yesterday, as there was water everywhere.
This used to be my favorite type of weather for going golfing, but when you have to work in the hot sun all day, this isn't much fun.

Ugh. You're bringing back memories of 38 degrees plus high humidity and packed buses in Rome. 10 minutes on the bus and you emerge soaked in your own sweat and the sweat of the people pressed against you in the sardine can.

Riding the LRT home today would be horrible. Sandwhiched between 2 people....the smell of sweat plus the oppressive heat would be nauseating.

Nothing wrong with the heat... what sucks though is:
a) going to work when it's 10 degrees, coming back when it's 30
b) A/C at work is ridiculous - have to wear a jacket
c) not being allowed shorts in the should be less air conditioned office
c) A/C at home isn't enough
But the heat is awesome. If I was on holliday at a beach, I'd be loving it. Therefore, I concluded that the problem is not that it's hot but that I'm not on holliday at a beach.

My experience with air conditioners are useless and a waste money with Calgary's climate.
I had one in my last home and our most recent home we built I made sure not to add one. The cost and benefit doesn't add up in Calgary's climate where we might have a few days in the summer where it'd be a luxury to have. I shut the shutters and windows during the during the day and open the windows at night. Cheap and effective. Tomorrow we are back to normal weather and all will be good.

My experience with air conditioners are they are useless and a waste money with Calgary's climate. Places like Kelowna to some degree and warmer climates they are a necessity.

Anyone here know a lot about portable air conditioners? I bought one a month or so ago, and it has been working really good until this heat wave came...now the water is draining out of it after it has been on for a decent amount of time. The manual suggests the water only needs to be drained at the end of the season, but it seems like I can drain it once an hour. The problem is of course it is leaking all over my carpet.
Is there anything I can do about this? Or is the weather just far too hot even for the AC unit?

my condo has air conditioning (not the unit itself, but the building hallways), so all i need to do is open a window and crack my door, cool air comes flowing in. plus being on the ground floor with no direct sunlight helps
i have an easier time with the heat here than in my old basement suite
