I find it funny that a Flames fan would rag on someone for wearing their teams colours to a game.
Oh and btw, I've worn a watermelon on my head this season at the game, does that automatically make me an idiot? Are we really going to resort to name calling?

Shouldn't security be kicking out whoever has a siren? It is against the rules, as far as I know.

Is a watermelon a mask that obstructs your view of the game? No? Then you're not an idiot.
I don't give a crap what you wear to the game, just don't think you're a more diehard and passionate fan than me based on the fact that you have the ability to hollow out a piece of fruit. Most Riders fans tend to think this is true.

And don't give me that crap about passion. Most people who claim themselves to be Rider fans are doing simply because they're from the province and couldn't name more than 3 players on the team. Getting drunk and throwing a watermelon on your head has nothing to do with passion for a team. It's hilarious to see all these TSN clips of idiots wearing masks and helmets to the game last night - a fan who actually cares about the game would much rather see the game unobstructed then to show off how hardcore they are.

Posts like this really confound me. I've heard this argument over and over that we're all a bunch of bandwagon jumpers who don't know anything about the team but that is such BULL. Especially coming from somebody who posts on a Flames site who has a fan base who basically ignored the team (and rightfully so, some might say) for the better part of a decade because they stank.
A lot of the time viewpoints like yours are because of one thing and one thing only: Jealousy. You wish Stamps fans were an all encompassing, young and old fanbase, but you're not.
The people of Sask have nothing else. There's the Riders and...maybe the Pats in the winter but other than that there are no other attractions. No NHL, no Vipers, no Roughnecks and certainly not a lot of the other things that make Calgary fun. So naturally EVERYONE is part of a single fanbase instead of being spread around with their interests like in Calgary. Sask has THE highest per capita football youth participation rate in Canada...by a mile.
Put it this way: When was the last time you knew MULTIPLE people who's parents, grandparents, and kids ALL were huge fans of a team. And enough so that they all watched every game. And yeah maybe my Grandmother (and all those of my friends is SSK) don't know every Rider player but the fact is in SASK right now it is like during the 04 run for the Flames. Everyone in that city is in a fervour and is talking football 24/7, even with complete strangers. We have a special bond with our team. Instead of bashing it maybe you should emulate it. I wish people in this city acted like they cared more about the Stamps sometimes, instead of calling it bush league and saying they "only watch NFL".
Also it is very common for the stands to be half full at taylor field with people under 30. The avg age at a Stamps game is at minimum 45-50. Not that that's a knock, the Stamps have some pretty good fans (30,000 per game avg for the better part of a decade now IIRC), but most of you don't live and die by your team.
In fact if we took a poll in Calgary I'm sure you'd find the Stamps #2 or #3 on almost all serveyed with the Flames and perhaps Roughnecks or NFL teams coming in at #1 or 2 on every list. Not so in SSK Riders would be #1 on 99% of those surveyed, going #2 behind a few NHL teams.
And you comment on Hardcore fans not wearing masks is hilarious because everytime I go to a stamps game i see people in those Mexican wrestling masks and everyone who sits around them is amazed at how hardcore these people must be and applaud them for being "true fans". We have the closest thing Canada will ever see to a NCAA football type crowd, and yes this leads to us having a higher per capita of drunk D-bags (i wouldn't wish sitting in the college section in a stamps jersey at Taylor field on my worst enemy), but we are also some of the best fans.
If my buddy TheWhiteOut wasn't banned from CP he'd tell you that we went to labour day last year in SSK and were treated like gold because Rider fans appreciate football like no others in Canada and love the rivalry with WPG.
Does this make us better? Certainly not. I totally respect the fans from all other CFL cities. And certainly don't tell me we are arrogant. Sure we sometimes pull the "we have the best fans ever" card, but you know what it just might be true (at least in the CFL). Are we arrogant? Put it this way how arrogant would Flames fans have been, especially around Oil and Canuck fans, if we'd won the Cup in 04 after missing the playoffs for 7 straight years. Except for Rider fans we were dealing with WAY worse teams that Flames fans ever had to and for a lot longer.
We're not arrogant were just elated that our crappy team with great fans is now a great team with great fans.

Wrong. Again I am not surprised that a Rider fan can't understand that others fan are not jealous of them and that they would resort to another arrogant comeback but it that opinion right there that pisses people off. The fact that you think the only reason people don't like Riders fans is jealous is not only arrogant it is stupid.
There is nothing to be jealous about in regards to being a Rider fan. It is no better than being a fan of any other team in any other city/league/sport/country etc.

Wrong. I know plenty of people from Sask that are not fans of football or the Riders. It is not some province-wide religion. It certainly is popular but my guess that more than half the province doesn't or only mildly cares about the Riders. That is no slouch against them but the fact that many people are not big sports fans in any city/province. Sports fans always overrate the amount that regular people care about sports.
They may have a high per capita rate which is super awesome and makes the Rider fans 100-200 x better than anywhere else but that doesn't really mean all that much in the real world. Football is huge in Quebec at the minor and University level, hasn't really meant much for the Als or getting a team in Quebec City.

I know families like that in Calgary so I would say the last time was about one second ago.

"Special bond" that is hilarious. I guess other fans can't beat that "Special Bond."

My guess is that you would be 100% wrong about that 99% number. Plenty of people that would have teams from a multitude of sports ahead of the precious Riders.

And my "good buddy" Mandiekandie from Gostampsgo will tell you about the crappy way she was treated at Taylor Field because Rider fans don't care about football and just treat the games as a huge party to get drunk and act like jerks. (See how all your antedotecal stories have similar type stories from the Stamps and really any other team in the league. Its almost like every team has hardcore fans like the Riders do...who would have thought that.)

I am confused you say you aren't arrogant, but then ask if you are? Didn't you just answer the question with the wrong answer?
And what does winning the Grey Cup have to do with the arrogance from the previous 20 years when going into the season the Riders were always the greatest team ever?
Might be true??? didn't you just write 100+ words telling us it was true for sure?

Great team??? It is 7 games into the f'ing season. How great did BC end up last year? Ask Montreal how great they were all those years they went 8-0, 9-0, 8-0, 9-0.
Perhaps we could wait a little bit before proclaiming any teams great after a lackluster Grey Cup win and a nice little winning streak to start a season.

Again, you come off as an angry Stamps fan who has to resort to bashing another teams fan base. Why can't you just respect the fact that Rider fans love their team? Its sad really because fans like you are the reason that I dislike the Stamps so much. I'm sure you not all like that, in fact I know so because I know some great Stamps fans, but the bitter fans like you that have some sort of pathetic hatred of the Riders just because our fans are revered by a lot of the public and media for being hardcore gives you this giant chip on your shoulder.
I honestly feel sorry for fans like you because you always have to compare you fandom to anothers. You can't just be glad you're a fan of your team and if others seem to have a more dedicated fanbase then so what?
I don't cry in my cherios because Flames fans don't sing anthems like European soccer fans do. I realize that European fans are often a lot more rambunctious when it comes to cheering/singing/celebrating the whole game. Does that make them better fans? Absolutely not. They just show their affection for their team more than NA fans do (in a lot of cases).
I mention we have a special bond and you have to bash me? I never said it's impossible for other teams to feel the same way.

There's no use responding to a Rider when they have the nerve to compare themselves to NCAA fans. When you sell out an 81 000 seat stadium for a spring game (in Lincoln, Nebraska, population 250k) then come back and talk to me.
It's funny to hear Rider fans talk about how everyone and their dog are diehard Rider fans, but they couldn't even fill a 28 000 seat stadium every night before last season. That's so hardcore.

I said closest thing to. Never said it was that close just closer compared to the rest of the CFL.
Really? Because Calgary has quadruple the population and you've only averaged about 3000 more per game over the last 5 years. Keep in mind Regina is about 200,000 people. By far the smallest market in the CFL. That's half of Hamilton who had 17000 the other night against their rivals the argos. And yes I believe hamilton has some hardcore fans too but when your team is a combined 5-100 (exagerating a little here for effect) over the last 5 seasons you can see why they don't show up.
How bout this for hardcore. So few of us live in SASK anymore that we fill almost every building in the CFL. We get 8,000-12,000 here in Calgary. About 5,000 in T.O., Van City and EDM. Hell we've had a billboard on the street right outside of Commenwealth for about 5 years. (don't know if its still there. it said "we live here too")
The Sask social club of BC/Vancouver held a rally a few years ago and 18,000 people showed up!!! We used Maple Leaf Gardens to stage our pep Rally in 1989 in TO. You think Stamps fans could do that? Hell even the Argos probably couldn't.
We fill Burns stadium (whatever its called now) with 5,000 fans for a pep rally every time we are in Calgary. See since I'm sure you didn't know but we have a pep rally before every game in Regina at our practise field next door to Taylor field where we party it up before a game.
And when we come to Calgary our pep rally dwarfs you 50 guys tailgating. That being said the tailgating in Calgary isn't half bad.
Hows all that for hardcore?
Think about these examples as well:
How many Stamps car flags are there in Calgary? 20? 10? Stickers excluded because those are FREE for all STH every year they renew, including the first, so none of those people went out to a store and paid $15 bucks for those.
How many Flames flags are there? 500? 1000? Well think proportionally how big Sask is and that is how many flags they have, especially in Regina, Saskatoon and Swift Current.
How many out of towners are STH to the Stamps? Now not like Airdrie or Cochrane or Chestermere but Medicine Hat, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge. 10? 20?
The Riders have a minimum of 100 STH from out of city, maybe significantly more. Moose Jaw (about 45 mins), Prince Albert (about 2 hrs IIRC), Saskatoon (1.5 hrs), Swift Current (2hrs), Lloydminster (4hrs).
Ever wonder why we play so many home games on Sat and Sun? Or why our Labour day game is on Sunday, not monday? Yeah its all those out of towners that need to be able to trave.
Ever been on the train and seen the big C in Kensington on the side of that building (it just got erased)? Ever seen numerous Flames jerseys in the windows of regular (non sports related) stores, for display of support not sale? Yeah when was that last time you saw that for the Stamps. Well in Sask Riders are the #1 draw in town so you see more of that stuff.
We're not better you just can't compete because you have other distractions.
DId you know that there is a town about and hour and a half east of Regina that proudly claims to be home of gainer the gopher and has a giant sign adorned with Rider flags? No one and I mean NO ONE would take ownership of Ralph "worst mascot ever" the Dog.
Look at it this way too. If the Flames signed Mats Sundin tomorrow and the Stamps were also 8-0 on that same newsday who would get all of the coverage on the Radio and newspaper?
Not so in Sask because the Riders are the Flames there.

This isn't worth my time since there's no arguing with a Rider fan.
It's not a football game for most Rider "fans" - it's a social event. I know and go to school with lots of people from Saskatchewan. I never hear most of them say anything about the Riders, but when they roll into town there they are painted green with a watermelon on their head. When's the last time you met someone from Saskatchewan who didn't claim to be a Rider fan? And look at how many people they get in their building when they don't win the Grey Cup. Something doesn't add up there.

I don't compare my fandom to others, it is you that is constantly comparing your fandom and Riders fans to others. I just pointed out that they are not better than other teams fans.

It's not even just that, it's also a civic pride thing. The Riders are one of the only things that gives the province regular national attention and thus the mood of the province and it's perception of its status in the world is very much connected to the fortunes and fandom of the football team.

Should they be proud that they have won one title in 20 years in an 8 team league?

Hey I completely agree. Sure I think we're the best fans in the CFL but I was responding to a post that called us a bunch of bandwagon jumping arrogant pricks.
Each CFL team should be proud of their fans. Just like how I am proud of the Flames even though Leafs fans fill our own building every time they play here. That doesn't mean they're better. But on the same token I don't call them a-holes just because they are frickin everywhere.

C'mon I'm not even the one that brought that up, it was all the other posters, and on the call in show on QR77 after the game, that the Rider fan "myth" was brought up. You guys were the ones complaining that we are media darlings and that it was not deserved.
On the other hand what other team has 12,000 fans in an opposing teams building that's not labour day...and even then.
BTW Cowboy89 that was one so well put in describing why Rider fans are different.

again, is the low blow necessary? Stamps have had one of the best teams in the CFL in the last 20 years and you only have 2 including 1 with our "crappy and always lucky" crandell.
Actually let me amend this a bit.
The Stamps regular season record in the last 20 years is at least twice as good as the Riders in terms of winning % and we both have 2 championships.
Who should be the proud ones?

Well except we have three.
Rider fans these days are like 16 year old kids getting drunk for the first time. They can't contain their excitement and don't know how to control it. It's amusing to watch at first but after they start getting cocky it only becomes annoying.
I remember the 90's... my Riderfan buddies were constantly getting their hopes stomped on. It was good fun for us to watch them just get beside themselves in anger after every Stamps-Riders game. But I knew that if their team ever got good those same guys would become difficult to stomach. I was right.

Yeah my bad. Must have missed one.
This sums up pretty much all the Rider haters in this thread.
You all loved it when we were the Cubs of CFL. Lots of great fans, no championships. Now that we are winning you all hate it because it'd be like if the Leafs won the Cup. TSN would have 24/7 coverage and it would drive everyone including me crazy because all those leafs fans that we've picked on for umpteen years would now be able to turn around and shove it right back in our faces.

They won one Cup, lets hold off on proclaiming them the Eskimos of the early 80's.
They haven't done squat in the winning dept in order to make others hate them.
I know that it is tough for you to understand but people don't hate Rider fans because they are jealous. They hate them because they are obnoxious.
